Could this be Australia’s best job ever?
If you’re a lover of all-things island life from beaches, snorkelling, jetskiing, bike riding and indulging in fresh, local food, you may want to tune in.
Tourism Whitsundays has just revealed its looking for a Chief Icon Officer with the 10-day contract worth around $10,000 in flights, accommodation, experiences and food.
The successful candidate will be tasked with one mission: find out what makes the Whitsundays so iconic.
If you’ve ever explored Queensland’s central coast, you’ll know what all the fuss is about with the Whitsundays itself an archipelago of 74 islands that’s known for turquoise waters, reef snorkelling, diving, and island hopping
If you’re yet to visit, this new role could be the best way to explore it.
All you need is “iconic energy, a sense of adventure and a phone”.
And the best part? You can bring a plus one, aka Chief Icon Assistant.
So, what even is a Chief Icon Officer and how do you apply?
Your days will be spent exploring Australia’s most iconic natural landmarks; the Great Barrier Reef, Whitehaven Beach, Heart Reef and the 74 Islands.
Afternoons involve scouting the best sunset spots, while your evenings will be assessing the region’s dining and nightlife.
There’s also hiking, mountain biking, jet skiing, snorkelling and swimming at Whitehaven Beach on the agenda, with plenty of time to relax and explore at your own pace.
The Chief Icon Officer will document it all on TikTok and Instagram, sharing the Whitsundays with their audience in real time.
And speaking of social media, that’s also how you apply for the role.
Candidates will need to post a video on TikTok or Instagram using #iconofficer and introduce themselves.
It’s about showing the tourism team why you’re an icon, as you showcase your favourite local icon or tell them what makes something iconic. Then fill out the application form the tourism board’s website.
“The Whitsundays is naturally iconic, we know that. But we wanted to find a fresh new way to show Australians what’s actually here, beyond the pictures,” Tim Booth, CEO, Tourism Whitsundays told news.com.au.
“The Chief Icon Officer came from a simple question: what if we handed the keys to someone who just gets it? Someone iconic in their own way, with the energy, the curiosity and the creativity to experience The Whitsundays the way our visitors do and share it in real time.
“It takes an icon to know an icon, and The Whitsundays deserves nothing less.”
Mr Booth said “apply, bring your best mate, and spend 10 days in one of the most beautiful places on earth”.
Aussies are already losing their minds over the role after the tourism board shared details on its official Instagram page.
“OMG!! Best job EVER!!” one person wrote.
“Best job in the world,” another said, while a third added: “Omg this is a dream!!!!”
Applications are now open and close May 8, 2026. The role runs for 10 days between May and July 2026 – and you must be 18 years or over.
