SHANE van Gisbergen is set to return to the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series, reuniting with Niece Motorsports for Watkins Glen International on May 8.
To date, SVG has one truck series start, in 2023 at Lucas Oil Indianapolis Raceway Park, a companion event to his second Cup Series start on the Indianapolis Motor Speedway road course.
That maiden outing on an oval resulted in a 19th-place finish.
At Watkins Glen, SVG has two career Cup Series starts, resulting in a win and a second-place finish after a last-lap pass for the lead from Chris Buescher in 2024.
In the second-tier O’Reilly Auto Parts Series, his two race starts saw him finish fifth in 2024 and in the fence last year, after being punted by teammate Connor Zilisch while leading.
“I’m really excited to have the opportunity to race for Niece Motorsports at Watkins Glen,” said van Gisbergen.
“I raced the truck once back in 2023 at IRP, and it was epic!
“Happy to be back at one of my favourite tracks.
“Hopefully, we have a good crack at it.
“Thanks to Niece Motorsports, Circle B Diecast, DQS, J.F. Electric, Chevrolet and Trackhouse for giving me the opportunity.
“It’s going to be a lot of fun.”
For the team, the opportunity to secure the services of the six-time Cup Series road course race winner was a no-brainer.
“Shane’s ability on road courses made him a clear priority for our organization at Watkins Glen,” said Cody Efaw, Team President and CEO.
“When we learned Shane had interest in running Truck Series races, it felt like a natural fit.
“Our fab and body shop have put in a tremendous amount of work building new road course trucks, and we’re confident in what we’re bringing to the track.
“With Shane and Ross (Chastain) – both proven Cup Series road course winners – paired with Andres Perez de Lara, a talented road course racer in his own right, we like the strength of our lineup, and expect to be in contention for the win.”
This weekend, the NASCAR Cup Series returns to the Talladega Superspeedway.
