VOORHEES, N.J. — Travis Sanheim didn’t feel he warranted a trip to the penalty box with four of his teammates.

But when all was said and done in Wednesday night’s riveting and whacky Game 3, he didn’t mind it.

In fact, he’ll probably remember it for a long time.

“I think the vibes were really good there,” Sanheim said Thursday afternoon.

Who knew the penalty box could be so fun? Well, it’s not every game that five players are in there at once.

And rejoicing, too.

That’s what happened in the Flyers’ intense, animosity-filled, 5-2 win over the Penguins. A second-period scuffle between Travis Konecny and Bryan Rust led to roughing penalties being handed out like free samples.

Sanheim, Konecny, Christian Dvorak, Matvei Michkov and Cam York all piled into the one penalty box. Five of Pittsburgh’s players went into the other one. The Flyers, though, were awarded a power play because Rust received four minutes for his roughing of Konecny.

When Trevor Zegras capitalized with a game-tying 1-1 goal, he bolted toward the penalty box and punched the glass. In close quarters, his teammates shared a group hug and then pounded on the glass, as well.

“It was funny because Dvo had mentioned right before, ‘Imagine the celebration if we score one here,'” Konecny said Wednesday night. “Ziggy must’ve heard him somehow and came flying over to the box.”

Zegras had a simple explanation for why he did.

“There were a lot of them in there,” he said. “I figured they were going to be jumping around.”

Did they have any room?

“We were tight,” Sanheim said. “I think there were only, like, three guys that could sit, a couple of guys standing. I think most of us at one point wanted to stand, we were into the game and obviously cheering on the guys. We had a lot of fun in there.”

In his first season as the Flyers’ head coach, Rick Tocchet has noticed a genuine bond with his team.

“I’ve been in the game 40 years, and I’m not just saying it, this is one of the tightest groups,” Tocchet said. “For me, even as a coach, even as a player, it’s very, very tight.”

The party in the penalty box was the start of a huge second period for the Flyers, who flipped a 1-0 deficit into a 3-1 lead. The fans at Xfinity Mobile Arena loved it.

“The building helps,” Sanheim said. “It just kind of fueled us.”
