FAIRFIELD, Calif. — The Cougars’ season concluded as they fell to second-seeded San Diego in a closely contested West Coast Conference Championship semifinal dual.

USD clinched the doubles point on a tight 7-5 No. 3 set win over the Cougs’ Zali Morris and Yura Nakagawa, with WSU’s No. 1 pairing of Maxine Murphy and Chisato Kanemaki leading 5-4 when their set was left unfinished.

In singles, Murphy and Nakagawa picked up hard-fought wins for the Cougs (16-8), while Wazzu’s No. 1 Eva Alvarez Sande was deadlocked in a 3-6, 7-6 (4), 4-4 battle that was left unfinished when the Toreros clinched the dual.

Sacramento State 4, Idaho 1

PHOENIX, Ariz. — Idaho was competitive up and down its lineup, but saw its season come to a close with a team dual defeat to top-seeded Sacramento State in the semifinals of the Big Sky Conference Championships.

Junior Ida Johansson scored a 6-0, 6-4 No. 3 singles win to provide the sole point of the dual for the Vandals (11-11). Idaho’s Chenyue Xu was early in the third set of a back-and-forth No. 1 singles battle while No. 6 singles player Soha Singh was up a set but trailing in the second when their respective matches were left unfinished as the dual had been clinched.

BASEBALL

Washington State 10, New Mexico 3

PULLMAN — The Cougars gave up three runs in the first inning, but shut out New Mexico the rest of the way and enjoyed home runs from Matt Priest and Ryan Skjonsby in a 10-3 Mountain West Conference victory at Bailey-Brayton Field to open a three-game series.

Skjonsby earned his seventh homer of the season on a three-run blast past right field in the bottom of the first to pull Washington State (22-20, 10-6) ahead 4-3. Priest had a rare 4-for-4 batting performance including a double and his solo homer, which came on a third-inning shot over left field.
