The government is planning new data centre rules that will monitor the credentials of company directors and the nationality of investors, but operators have warned the proposal could slow them down in the race to raise billions of dollars of capital to win the artificial intelligence infrastructure arms race.

The mooted rules will impose stricter security requirements for big data centre players such as AirTrunk, CDC Data Centres and NextDC, and tech giants like Amazon Web Services, Google and Microsoft, which host sensitive government information.
