The chief suspect in the security scare at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner on Saturday, which saw US President Donald Trump whisked out of the building to safety, faced court on Monday, US time.

White House shooter’s chilling manifesto revealed

Cole Tomas Allen allegedly ran through a security barrier at the Washington DC Hilton hotel before being stopped from entering the ballroom where Mr Trump was seated.

At court he was told he was facing three charges including “attempting to assassinate the President of the United States”.

US First Lady Melania Trump has furiously called for TV host Jimmy Kimmel to be sacked. She called him a “coward” after a joke where he called her an “expectant widow”. Although the joke was aired several days before Saturday’s gala.

Donald Trump has backed up his wife, calling for Kimmel to be “immediately fired” due to his “call for violence”.

A video of a woman from that dinner has gone viral. In the images the apparent guest can be seen choosing what to prioritise during the melee. The priority, it seems, was snaffling a bottle of wine.

Mr Trump will host King Charles on Monday at the White House. The meeting comes at an awkward time for UK-US relations with the US president continually berating British Prime Minister Kier Starmer amid suggestions the US could withdraw its recognition of UK sovereignty over the contested Falkland Islands.

Meanwhile, Iran has reportedly flagged a new peace plan. This one would see the Strait of Hormuz reopened and clashes end, but would kick discussions on Tehran’s nuclear program into the long grass.
