A few weeks have passed since the NFL draft, when many of the nation’s top college athletes heard their names called.
Among them was Virginia Beach native and Salem High School graduate Kaelon Black.
Black was selected No. 90 overall in the third round by the San Francisco 49ers following a standout senior season at Indiana. He rushed for more than 1,000 yards, recorded the best year of his college career and helped lead the Hoosiers to a national championship while playing a key role in transforming the program.

Black was taken on Day 2 of the draft and was the third running back selected.
Adding running backs has become a trend for San Francisco in recent years. Black is the sixth running back the 49ers have drafted in the past six drafts.
“We had him as the second-rated back on the board,” coach Kyle Shanahan said during an appearance on “The Rich Eisen Show.” “That’s just our evaluation, right or wrong.”
Black is set to begin rookie minicamp on May 8.
