Lawrence Technological University has named Gretchen Wilkins as a tenured Associate Professor and Chair of Architecture. Wilkins joins LTU after serving as Head of Architecture and Interim Dean at Cranbrook Academy of Art. Earlier in her career, Wilkins directed RMIT University’s Master of Urban Design program across campuses in Melbourne, Barcelona, and Ho Chi Minh City.
Wilkins holds a Master of Architecture from the University of Michigan and a PhD from RMIT University in Melbourne, Australia. A licensed architect, she brings a combination of academic and professional expertise that aligns with LTU’s College of Architecture and Design focus on integrating scholarship with practice.
Wilkins’ work has involved launching academic programs in Southeast Asia and graduate design studios in Michigan, while her research and creative practice address themes at the intersection of architecture and urbanism, including adaptive reuse, urban agriculture, distributed design, and evolving models for architectural education.
“We recognize the strength of her academic and professional contributions and her hiring marks a key moment in the evolution of the Department of Architecture and CoAD as a whole,” said Lilian Crum, Interim Dean of the College of Architecture and Design. “Her leadership arrives at a time when CoAD is actively refining its definition of the academic design practitioner, a faculty profile that aligns with LTU’s aspirations for innovation, relevance, and research growth.”
