MATCH CENTRE: Cowboys vs Eels teams, scores, videos, updates

The Cowboys led by eight points late in the contest before the Eels struck with the speed of lightning, scoring twice to send the game into extra time.

The Eels had first possession and marched the ball upfield, getting within range for a Moses field goal in their first set.

Moses slotted the field goal despite a reckless chargedown attempt from Scott Drinkwater and in confusing scenes Parramatta was awarded a penalty after the play, allowing Ronald Volkman to slot another goal from right in front.

An injury to North Queensland halfback Tom Dearden flipped the script of the match just when it looked like the Cowboys would canter to victory in Jason Taumalolo’s milestone game.

Queensland and Cowboys fans collectively held their breath with 20 minutes to play when Dearden was awkwardly tackled from behind, although he seemed to escape major injury.

The brave halfback battled on through the pain but he struggled to make any impact in attack or defence and succumbed to the injury after the 80th minute.

The Eels were the more polished side, completing at more than 90 per cent through the contest, but an inability to stop linebreaks and stick their tackles kept the Cowboys in front.

ORIGIN FEARS

Dearden’s ankle injury could have serious ramifications for the Maroons and Moses might also have an issue after Drinkwater ran through his legs when he kicked the winning field goal.

Both Origin camps will be closely monitoring the situation this week with squads set to be named at the conclusion of round 11.

JT runs out as the most capped Cowboy! | 00:42

THERE’S A NEW SHERIFF IN TOWN

Cowboys fans might have to start referring to Johnathan Thurston as “JT7” after Taumalolo usurped his position as North Queensland’s most-capped player of all time.

After 295 games with the Cowboys, it makes sense that the fearsome forward also takes over the “JT” moniker.

It seems inevitable that one day a bronze Taumalolo will join Thurston in the shadows of Townsville’s stadium so fans will forever remember two of the greatest players the north has ever seen.

Thurston was invited to present his good friend’s milestone jersey before the game, saying it was a historic moment in the club’s history.

“It’s a history-breaking night tonight and it’s an honour and a privilege to be here on the sideline for it,” Thurston said.

“I’m extremely proud of him.

“It was a huge honour to be asked by Jason and the club to present his jersey for tonight. It was quite emotional, I had to hold it all together to get through it.”

FOX LAB STATS

– Eels fifth win from seven “Golden Point” matches since 2020. Not sure how this game counts as Golden point, as the winning point bizarrely didn’t finish the match.

– Three straight non wins for the Cowboys in Golden Point. Lost to Manly in 2023 and had a 30-all draw with Penrith last season.

– Just the Eels second win in past seven games. Second win this season conceding 30 points or more (40-32 v Broncos in round 2)

– Cowboys first loss in 15th games when leading at the half time break. Cowboys led 30-22 after 74 minutes.

– The Eels missed 54 tackles and conceded 9 linebreaks to 6. Most missed tackles in a win for the Eels on record.

– Parramatta completed 43/46 sets (93%) – their best since early in 2023.

– Soni Luke suffered a medial left knee injury in a tackle from Junior Paulo in the 53rd minute – soon after taking the field. He limped from off and did not return.

– Tom Dearden injured his ankle late in the second half in a possible hip drop tackle – but could not leave the field as the Cowboys had used all of their interchanges. He survived until the 80th minute, but was replaced with the extra interchanges for golden point.

– Scott Drinkwater was placed on report after full time for contact on Mitch Moses taking the field goal. He has no charges in the past 12 months.

– Jason Taumalolo maintains his dismal record in milestone matches as he breaks Johnathan Thurston’s 294 game record of the Cowboys. He had previously lost game 1, 100, 150, 200, 250
