The Panthers have shot out to a 12-4 lead over the Storm thanks to their co-captain and star halfback Nathan Cleary.
After spreading the ball to the right Izack Tago put up a chip-kick, which was collected by Dylan Edwards, who found Cleary on his inside.
Penrith’s main man then backed himself and beat three Storm players to score. After nailing the conversion he then kicked a penalty goal five minutes later after Cameron Munster — who moved to fullback before kick-off — was pinged for a second effort.
It came after the Storm were awarded a contentious try with a replay showing Xavier Coates looked as though he knocked on into Edwards before grounding the ball.
Earlier, the Panthers opened up the scoring when Isaiah Papali’i burrowed over from dummy-half.
