THAT didn’t last long.
The public sale of all non-renewed campsites for this year’s Repco Bathurst 1000 lasted only 90 minutes, with the remaining places on top of the Mountain and the powered sites in the paddock area all accounted for in ten minutes.
All told, over 90 per cent, or more than 6,500 campsites, were renewed ahead of the public sale for what is billed as the largest camping event in the southern hemisphere.
Over the years, camping at the event has exploded in popularity.
While the traditional campgrounds at Reid, Sulman and McPhillamy Parks are forever in high demand, the paddock campground now utilises practically all of the available Council land on the inside of the circuit behind the pits.
The Max Cameron Campground can be found on the outside of Hell Corner, adjacent to Harris Park, while the massive Chase Campgrounds are complemented by the Orchard and Enduro Campgrounds, which are now found further up Conrod Straight.
On the site of the old drive-in movie theatre is the Motorhome Park.
People who have missed out have been advised to keep an eye on unofficial Bathurst campers Facebook groups, where occasional resales take place.
“As we get closer to October, things tend to shuffle around, and opportunities come up more often than you’d think,” read a note in the Bathurst Camping group.
“Our tip: Jump into the group, keep an eye out, and don’t be shy about posting what you’re chasing — the campground community is pretty good like that.”
The Repco Bathurst 1000 is set for October 8-11.
