Talk about a spectacular view, it’s Matt Corby’s return to the Like A Version studio to take on Tame Impala’s monster hit, ‘Dracula’.
Combining two of Australia’s noodly guitar virtuosos in the same moment simply can’t go wrong, so it’s no surprise that Matt Corby knocks it out of the park with a Kevin Parker track for his fourth entry into the archives.
“It definitely was a challenge,” he said.
“There’s lots of funny, tricky moments that until you break the song down, you don’t really hear. I guess it’s how clever Kevin is.”
Infusing the cover with his Philly soul-inflected sound, Matt Corby was able to pull the track into his own realm, and massage it with his band to a point where they felt good about performing it.
“It’s hard to have too much of a plan,” he said.
“I think once we got to that point in the arrangement with ‘Dracula’ we were like ‘cool, it’s in a place where it feels passable as a version’. I think it was a struggle just to get to that point, for all of us to be like ‘is this the right way through the song, doing it in this shade?’.”
And if you’re wondering, Matt has also been fooled by the lyrics in the chorus of ‘Dracula’. He admitted he probably sang “run from the sun like Dracula” multiple times in the recording process.
Honestly, if he hadn’t said it I wouldn’t have noticed.
