LIBERTY LAKE, Wash. — Senior Logan Roos carded a new personal best 2-over-par 72, including an eagle on the 18th hole, and the Sandpoint boys tied for first at a season-opening match play tournament Thursday at Liberty Lake Golf Course.

Roos collected 13 of the Bulldogs’ 56.5 points, which tied with Lake City in what was a highly competitive outing that also included Lewiston, Lakeland and Post Falls.

Senior Micah Young tallied a 79 and six points, junior Bode Eacret an 81 and eight points, and senior Tyler Weisz an 84 and a team-high 15.5 points. Senior Everett Gilman shot an 88 and recorded seven points while junior Landon Day finished off his score of 94 with four pars, a birdie and seven points of his own.

“My goal was to have the kids stay present, immediately turn the page on the previous hole and refocus for the next hole,” Sandpoint High head coach Mike Deprez said in reference to the match play tournament format, where every hole mattered for points.

For the girls, freshman Hannah Majors registered a team-high 11 points and put up a score of 104 at the MeadowWood Golf Course, located in Liberty Lake. Ella Mahlum, Alison Petro and Aspen Little-Torrez also competed for the Lady Bulldogs, which placed fifth amongst the five-team field.

“We only had four girls today, just enough to make a team,” Deprez said. “They’ve been playing recreationally for the last year and this is their first time playing competitively. They’re gaining a lot of experience and taking a lot of lessons — they’re still getting used to playing 18 holes and what that all entails. Hannah is the only one who’s played competitive golf before, so the team is built around her.”

Sandpoint returns to action Wednesday at The Highlands Golf Course for the Post Falls Invite.
