Halle Berry broke her silence after her ex-husband David Justice made controversial comments about why their marriage didn’t work out.
Justice, 59, sparked backlash earlier this week when he spoke about his relationship with the Oscar-winning actress, whom he was married to from 1993-1997, on a recent episode of the All the Smoke podcast. Fans were outraged when Justice claimed he divorced Berry because she “didn’t cook or clean.”
“So, I’m looking at my mom — and I’m a Midwest guy. So, in my mind, I’m thinking a wife at that time should cook, clean, [be] traditional, you know?” the former professional baseball player said. “She don’t cook, don’t clean, don’t really seem like motherly, and then we start having issues.”
“Then I’m thinking, ‘OK, if we have kids, is this the woman I want to have kids with and build a family with?’ At that time, as a young guy, she don’t cook, don’t clean, don’t really seem like motherly, and then we start having issues. I’ll say this, we never had any issues about any women, other men.” he continued.
He also alleged Berry proposed to him after only five months of dating, and said he accepted because he “didn’t want to say no and make her feel bad.”
Shortly after Justice’s comments went viral online, Berry took to Instagram to share a birthday post that doubled as a clap back.
Alongside a carousel of photos celebrating her 59th birthday on vacation, Berry wrote, “Phew…! cooking, cleaning and mothering.”
The post shared pictures of her celebrating in a tropical destination, including a photo of a card addressed to “Mom,” seemingly from her children Nahla, 17, and Maceo, 11.
In the comment section, fans were quick to wish the actress and happy birthday and hype her up for the epic comeback against her ex.
