What is an AI PC?

The term “AI PC”, or “AI laptop” has been gaining traction in the past year, but what does it actually mean? In HP’s case, AI PCs refer to a new class of devices that integrate dedicated neural processing units (NPUs) to offload artificial intelligence workloads from the CPU and GPU (central and graphics processing units). These NPUs are designed to improve efficiency in tasks like real-time transcription, adaptive performance tuning, and enhanced security features.

The concept is not entirely new, as machine learning acceleration has existed in some form on high-end business and gaming laptops for some time. However, HP’s 2025 lineup aims to bring AI-driven features to a broader audience. The key selling point is local AI processing, reducing reliance on cloud-based services and improving responsiveness, security, and battery life.
