Mike Gansey, the Cavaliers’ general manager since 2022, is leaving the Cavs to become the next president of basketball operations for the Philadelphia 76ers.
Shams Charania of ESPN was first to report the news. Gansey is replacing Daryl Morey, who was fired on May 12 shortly after the Sixers were eliminated by the Knicks in the second round of the playoffs.
Gansey, an Olmsted Falls native who makes his current home in Avon with his wife, three daughters and a son, is 43 years old. He started his climb up the Cavaliers’ front office ladder in the 2011-12 season as the Cavaliers’ basketball operations seasonal assistant.
More and more responsibility was handed to Gansey. He was in the front office of the Canton Charge (they became the Cleveland Charge in 2021) from 2012-2017. He was voted G-League Executive of the Year in 2016-17. The Charge made the playoffs all five years he was in their front office.
Gansey was named Cavaliers assistant general manager in 2017, then bumped to GM in 2022 when Koby Altman was named Cavaliers president of basketball operations.
Gansey was not as visible as some general managers during his time in Cleveland because Altman is the face of the Cavaliers’ front office. But his contributions to the Cavs making the playoffs five straight seasons did not go unnoticed by the Sixers.
The decision to hire Gansey was made by Harris Blitzer Sports & Entertainment President of Sports Bob Myers. Myers was general manager and later president of basketball operations for the Golden State Warriors from 2012-2023. He had a hand in the Warriors’ championship years of 2015, ‘17 and 2018 when Golden State beat the Cavaliers each time. The Cavs beat the Warriors for the NBA title in 2016.
Myers plans to be active in player acquisition and contract negotiations with 76ers players, according to reports out of Philadelphia.
