Game Preview: Nuggets vs Bulls
The Night ’n Day Otago Nuggets return to the Edgar Centre on Friday night looking to bounce back after a tough home loss to the Southland Sharks, while the Franklin Bulls make the trip south searching for a response of their own after a heavy defeat to the Jadcup Auckland Tuatara.
Both teams enter this matchup needing a reset, but with different motivations. Otago still owns the league’s best scoring defence and the best turnover margin, but the Nuggets will be without Isaac Miller-Jose, a major absence that changes the shape of the matchup. Miller-Jose has been one of Otago’s most important physical pieces, and his absence eases some of the size imbalance that may otherwise have favoured the Nuggets against Franklin.
For the Bulls, the challenge is to get back to what they do well. Franklin has shown elite ball movement, owns the league’s best offensive rebounding profile, and has three players capable of taking over stretches in Jace Carter, Derrin Boyd and Carter Whitt. But after dropping 3 of 4 games while giving up over 107 to the opposition, the Bulls need to tighten up defensively if they want to steal one on the road.

Last Time Out
The Nuggets were beaten 99-89 by the SBS Bank Southland Sharks in Dunedin.
Otago got off to a scorching start behind the outstanding shooting of Ethan Rusbatch, who poured in 29 points and added 8 rebounds on the day. Buay Tuach was also excellent, finishing with 25 points and 12 rebounds, while Craig Moller battled hard on the glass with a double-double.
But the Sharks stood firm. Caleb Asberry’s high-scoring night led the way, and Southland’s confidence and offensive power eventually carried them through. Rylan Jones controlled the game with 18 points and 7 assists, while Keylan Boone added 16 points and 11 rebounds as the Sharks continued their league best winning streak.

The Bulls were beaten 107-72 by the Jadcup Auckland Tuatara at Franklin Pool & Leisure.
Auckland set the tone early, racing to a 26-11 first-quarter lead before stretching the margin to 55-30 by halftime. Franklin found a bit of life in the third quarter, putting up 27 points to cut the gap to 17, but the Tuatara responded with a 33-point fourth quarter to put the game well out of reach.
The Tuatara’s depth, transition game and interior presence were too much for the Bulls, who could not keep pace despite contributions from Derrin Boyd, Carter Whitt and Dom Kelman-Poto.

The Nuggets have been built their record on defence, pressure and discipline. They keep the pace low while defending and take care of the rock while pressuring opponents into turnovers. When Otago is at its best, they make teams uncomfortable, force mistakes and turn those extra possessions into enough offence to control the game.
But Miller-Jose being out changes the rotation. His rebounding, defensive activity and ability to play bigger than his size have been important for Otago all season. Without him, the Nuggets lose one of their best physical matchups and one of their most disruptive defensive players. That eases the frontcourt pressure on a Bulls team that can already hurt opponents through Carter, Robinson and Kelman-Poto on the glass.
Franklin’s offensive prowess is easy to see. The Bulls crash the O-boards as well as anyone in the competition, and can create with the pass while taking care of the ball. Whitt controls the tempo, Boyd can score in bunches, and Carter gives them a high-production forward who can score, rebound and create matchup problems going up or down positionally.
The issue for the Bulls has been the defence, even more so of late. They are allowing 98.7 points per game and opponents are shooting a scorching 52 percent from the field against them. Against a Nuggets team that does not always score easily, Franklin will see this as a chance to correct that trend, but Rusbatch and Tuach are both coming off big offensive performances and Moller gives Otago another experienced perimeter scoring option with a rebounding presence.
The possession game will be key. Otago forces turnovers better than anyone, while Franklin creates second chances better than anyone. If the Nuggets can pressure the ball and keep the Bulls off the offensive glass, they can grind this into their kind of game. If Franklin protects the ball and turns misses into extra opportunities, the Bulls can put the Nuggets under real pressure.
Matchup to Watch: Buay Tuach v Jace Carter
Tuach is coming off one of his best performances of the season, finishing with 25 points and 12 rebounds against the Sharks. He gives Otago a powerful wing-forward option who can score at all three levels, attack the glass and defend multiple positions. With Miller-Jose out, Tuach’s rebounding and physicality become even more important, because the Nuggets will need him to help cover the frontcourt load while still carrying a major scoring role.
Carter has been the Bulls’ most consistent force, averaging 22.3 points and 10.9 rebounds. He gives Franklin a matchup problem every night, with the ability to score inside, step out from three and punish teams on the offensive glass. If Carter gets comfortable early, the Bulls can play through him and force Otago to send extra help.
The key for Tuach will be making Carter work at both ends. If he can attack in transition, hit perimeter shots and keep Carter occupied defensively, it can limit Carter’s ability to dominate the glass and conserve energy for offence. But if Carter can turn this into a physical battle, get to his spots and control the rebounding contest, Franklin’s frontcourt advantage becomes much harder for Otago to manage.
This one feels like a true swing matchup. If Tuach matches Carter’s production and helps Otago stay competitive on the boards, the Nuggets have a strong path at home. If Carter wins the scoring and rebounding battle clearly, the Bulls can tilt the game toward their strengths.
Matchup to Watch: Craig Moller v Dom Kelman-Poto
With Isaac Miller-Jose unavailable, Moller’s role becomes even more important for the Nuggets. He will need to give Otago size, rebounding and composure, while also using his shooting to stretch Franklin’s defence. If Moller can pull Kelman-Poto away from the paint, it creates more room for Buay Tuach, Ethan Rusbatch and Alain Louis to attack gaps and get downhill.
Kelman-Poto gives the Bulls strength, experience and efficiency around the basket. He is shooting 64 percent from the field and gives Franklin a physical frontcourt presence who can finish inside, pass from the post and help punish smaller lineups. With Miller-Jose out, the Bulls will likely see an opportunity to test Otago’s interior depth and make the Nuggets defend through contact.
The key for Moller is balance. He needs to rebound and hold his ground defensively, but he also has to make Kelman-Poto work at the other end. If he can knock down shots, make smart reads and keep the floor spaced, Otago can reduce Franklin’s size advantage and keep the Bulls’ defence moving.
For Kelman-Poto, the job is to be physical without getting dragged too far from his strengths. If he can establish position, finish efficiently and help Franklin control the offensive glass, the Bulls can put real pressure on an undermanned Nuggets frontcourt. But he will need to be vigilant on the three point line to make sure Moller doesn’t get loose from deep.
If Moller wins the spacing battle, Otago’s offence opens up. If Kelman-Poto wins the physical battle, Franklin’s frontcourt can become a major factor.

This will be a revealing clash of strengths.
The Nuggets defend better than anyone in the league and force turnovers at an elite rate. The Bulls move the ball, protect it and crash the offensive glass better than anyone. That means every possession will carry weight.
Miller-Jose being out is significant for Otago. It removes one of their best physical and defensive pieces, and it gives Franklin a clearer path to making the game about size, rebounding and second-chance points. But the Nuggets still have defensive structure, home court, and a trio of Rusbatch, Tuach and Moller capable of carrying the scoring load.
For Franklin, the opportunity is there. The Bulls need a response after the Tuatara loss, and their offensive rebounding and playmaking give them a strong route back. If Whitt controls the game, Boyd scores efficiently and Carter wins his matchup, Franklin can put real pressure on Otago.
For the Nuggets, it is about adapting. Thata-Paese’s first start gives them a new look, and if he settles quickly while Rusbatch and Tuach continue their scoring form, Otago can turn this into the type of defensive battle it has won throughout the season.
The Bulls have the size and offensive firepower. The Nuggets have the defence and home-court edge. Something has to give.
