Carlton’s 1995 flag through debutant eyes
Now for a little self indulgence, here’s a story I put together earlier in the week looking back 30 years ago on Carlton’s 1995 premiership.
Scott Camporeale, Ben Harrison, Simon Beaumont, Glenn Manton and Matt Clape all pulled on the navy blue for the first time that season, and they were all kind enough to tell me their stories of one of the most dominant seasons in history.
It’s been a tough year Blues fans, I hope this can bring you some joy today.

QT: Carlton 7.2 (44) leads Port Adelaide 3.2 (20)Patrick Cripps led all Carlton players with eight disposals and two clearances in a dominant opening quarter against Port Adelaide. (Getty Images)
Carlton fans will be wondering how they’ve kicked seven goals in a quarter and yet found themselves on the ropes.
The Blues take a 24-point lead into the first change at Docklands, but that’s a lead that was once 38 points.
Carlton is good value for this lead, to be fair, even with Port Adelaide’s late charge.
They lead the inside 50 count 17-9 and the clearances 16-4, an absolute belting in that department.
Harry McKay has two goals and seven disposals and is the top-ranked player at quarter-time, while Zak Butters and Patrick Cripps are the equal-leading ball-winners with eight touches apiece.
Tom De Koning leads everyone with four clearances, while Cooper Lord and Sam Walsh have added three each.

Harry Rowston kicks a goal after the siren, and somehow the Giants have extended their quarter time lead after being just four points up late in the second term.
It’s unbelievable burst from GWS and every bit of hard work the Suns did to claw their way back into the game has been undone.
Rowston has three goals on the board now while Harvey Thomas and Tom Green have been fantastic for the Giants.
Noah Anderson and Touk Miller have been the best for the Suns, but their forward line is struggling to fire, with Ben King registering just the two touches and no scores.

Cadman gets a free kick and converts
Sam Collins lets his arm slip over Aaron Cadman’s shoulder, and Cadman gets the free.
He converts and all that hard work from the Suns is starting to come undone again.

Boak finally ends Port Adelaide’s drought
It’s been an absolutely mad start at Docklands between Carlton and Port Adelaide.
The Blues kicked the first SIX goals of the match to race out to a 38-point lead.
Travis Boak, he of 386 games, has stopped the bleeding for the Power, for now, kicking their first goal of the match.
The highlight of the match so far has been this exquisite finish from the pocket from Francis Evans against his old side.

Jones gets one back for the Giants
GWS keep the Suns at bay on the edge of halftime via a Darcy Jones goal.
Meanwhile at Docklands the Power have finally got one back.
I’m bringing my man Chris De Silva in to keep an eye on that game because it’s starting to look brutal.

Ben Ainsworth kicks one and we’re back to a kick in it
A lovely set shot from Ainsworth and it’s back to four points.
Meanwhile we’re underway at Docklands and the Blues are blitzing Port! They have five unanswered goals and while the result doesn’t necessarily matter in this one, Carlton will be desperate for the four points for confidence alone.

Rowell gets his first of the day
We’re back to 10 points as the Suns transition like the Giants were in the first.
Matt Rowell has been kept quiet so far but he kicks a major on the run as all the Suns stars get involved.
Meanwhile, Ben Long has been called for two late hits in this game that absolutely were not free kicks. Not sure what the umps are seeing, but Long has been hard done by so far.

Another ‘stand’ call that’s not paid
We saw it last night in the Dockers and Lions game, and we’ve seen it again here at Carrara, with the umpire calling stand several times, the player not acknowledging, and no 50m penalty paid.
This one should have resulted in a Suns shot at goal as the Giants player ran from the mark after being told to stand several times.

O’Halloran kicks a ripper from the 50!
I’m not convinced Xavier O’Halloran was having a shot there!
He chucks the Sherrin on his left while on the run through the 50m arc and it cruises through the air perfectly.
A huge goal for the Giants!

Long gets the first of the second!
Awesome start for the Suns as Ben Long snaps a beauty on his right from the pocket.

Well I said the quarter was pretty much done after the Budarick goal, but it takes the Giants just a few seconds to get the centre break and find Jake Riccardi in the F50.
Luckily for the Suns he sits it out right just a little too much and misses, and it gives the Giants a 15-point lead at the first break.
The transition footy from GWS has been elite and we’ve been seeing the ball go from defence to attack without being touched.
The Suns have had the more inside-50s (17-11) but their efficiency with the pill once they get there is dire, going at 29% compared to the Giants’ 100%.
And possibly the worst stat for the usually harassing Suns midfield? Just five tackles in the first quarter. Their worst performance since 2022.

Budarick drags one back
Just as I say the Suns don’t have a heap of answers, they get a free kick for a deliberate and use it well, as Connor Budarick takes a strong pack mark 40m on a slight angle.
He kicks it and that will just about end the quarter.

Bedford kicks another Giants major
There are loose men everywhere again on transition from the Giants, and the play finds Toby Bedford in the F50.
He drills the goal and the Suns have few answers to the run and gun from GWS.
1h agoSat 16 Aug 2025 at 3:00am
Rowston kicks his second
He had one goal to his name coming into to this game, and now he has two in the first quarter.
It’s a lucky one … big Max Gruzewski ran onto the pill in the opposite pocket and went for the banana miracle goal, but absolutely floated it.
Luckily for the Giants it floated straight into the hands of Rowston.

Farrar gives Suns back-to-back goals
Jy Farrar takes a nice grab on the edge of the goalsquare after getting rid of Leek Aleer, who has been strong across halfback so far.
Farrar does a cheeky little Dom Sheed-did-he-didn’t-he-play on, but the umpire says he didn’t.
He goals and we’re back to eight points.

Read gets one back for the Suns
It’s a lovely juggling mark from Ethan Read in the pocket after a long Matt Rowell kick, and Read converts.
Much needed goal.

It’s three in a row for the Giants!
Alarm bells already for the Suns as Toby Greene marks untouched in the forward pocket and snaps the set shot through!
It’s six clearances to zip and it’s trouble.
1h agoSat 16 Aug 2025 at 2:46am
Rowston has GWS’s second
The Giants weather the storm in defence and the transition is electric.
Harry Rowston takes a good strong mark on the edge of the goalsquare and converts.
Hot start from the Giants!
