Since April, the Pasadena Senior Center has invited thousands from across the country for the Pasadena Senior Games, an Olympic-style multi-sport competition.
With the games coming to a close, there are some remaining events left for those interested in catching the matches.
“We have just made it our mission to engage, enrich and empower older adults, and this annual event is really one of the cornerstones of that mission,” Pasadena Senior Center Director of Marketing and Communications Charmaine Nelson told the Pasadena Weekly earlier this year.
The annual Pasadena Senior Games Cycling races will be held on Wednesday, June 17 at Long Beach’s El Dorado Park. A rare event for older adults, the cycling road race match is prioritizing safety. The race is in a closed course away from street traffic.
The timing and officiating for Senior Games Cycling will be provided by SoCal Cyclocross, headed by Dorothy Wong. Cost to register is $45 athlete fee plus $20 per event. Online registration is open through June 13, and race day registration will be available.
The Pasadena Senior Games awards gold, silver and bronze medals in five-year age categories for each event, with recreational and elite athletes welcome to join.
What started as a local initiative quickly gained traction, and games are played across various venues across Los Angeles.
“It’s really special because we are the only senior center in the country that hosts an event like this,” Nelson said. “To be the organization that brought it to Southern California over 30 years ago in the first place also makes us feel like we have a really special legacy, having 80-year-old pole vaulters and blind swimmers, people who are that dedicated to their sport, knowing that they’re going to be supported and acknowledged with the official results and times that we publish every year.”
The 2026 Pasadena Senior Games is a qualifier for the National Senior Games, which will take place in Tulsa, Okla. in 2027. Qualifying competitions are split between the Pasadena Senior Games and the San Diego Senior Games. The six sports this year at the Pasadena Senior Games that are California State Qualifying events for the National Senior Games are 5K/10K run road race, swimming, archery, cycling, table tennis and track & field.
