Wednesday’s walk-off win gave the Padres their first series win since May 22-24 against the Athletics. They are eight games behind the Dodgers in the division and in possession of the NL’s third wild-card spot, 1½ games behind the Phillies and one game up on the Nationals, Pirates and Cubs.
Baltimore Orioles (33-37, 4th in AL East)
The Orioles have won two in a row and five of 10, but they are 9½ games off the Rays’ and Yankees’ pace in the division and two games out of the AL’s last wild-card spot. The Orioles swept the Padres last year in San Diego even after trading away Ramón Laureano and Ryan O’Hearn at the deadline. They won 101 games in 2023, 91 in 2025, slipped to 75 last year and remain firmly under .500 to start this season.

San Diego: C Freddy Fermin has three of the team’s seven homers in June and leads the team with seven RBIs and a 1.052 OPS. The only other qualifying Padre with an OPS over .600 so far in June—OF Fernando Tatis Jr. (.903 OPS), who hit a walk-off homer on Wednesday. Three Padres have an OPS under .500 this month—1B Gavin Sheets (.464), 3B Manny Machado (.459) and SS Xander Bogaerts (.405).
Baltimore: 1B Pete Alonso leads the Orioles with four homers in June (.908 OPS) and OF Colton Cowser (.822 OPS in June) and 3B Coby Mayo (.712) both have three homers this month. C Adley Rutschman leads the team with 10 RBIs this month (1.131 OPS). For the season, RHP Rico Garcia (1.26 ERA) leads the team with 31 appearances, followed by 30 each from RHP Yennier Cano (2.38 ERA) and RHP Anthony Nuñez (5.29 ERA).

Padres RHP Griffin Canning (0-4, 6.34 ERA) | He’d allowed an 8.34 ERA over five starts before limiting the Mets to a run on three hits and two walks in five innings on Saturday in a no-decision. His six strikeouts in that game were one shy of a season high. Canning has allowed nine runs in 6⅔ innings in his two road starts so far. He has a 9.49 in 24⅔ career innings against the Orioles, including two starts in 2024 (10 IP, 8 ER).
Orioles RHP Shane Baz (3-6, 4.09 ERA) | He’s allowed two earned runs or fewer over his last four starts (1.75 ERA), although four unearned runs scored in his last start, a loss. Baz has won both of his career starts against the Padres, the last in 2025, when he struck out six over seven shutout innings for the Rays.

Padres RHP Randy Vásquez (5-4, 3.63 ERA) | He’s got a 6.16 ERA over his last four starts as his strikeout rate has shriveled from 8.1 per nine innings over his first nine starts to 3.7 per nine innings. He’s also allowed six homers over his last 19 innings after giving up four in 50⅓ innings to start the year. He has a 7.71 ERA over two starts (7 IP) against the Orioles, the last in 2024 (2 IP, 6 ER).
Orioles RHP Trey Gibson (1-1, 4.24 ERA) | The 24-year-old rookie is making a third straight start as an injury fill-in for Chris Bassitt. He has yet to complete six innings and has walked (8) more than he’s struck out (5) in the first 17 innings of his career. Gibson began the year ranked No. 72 in Baseball America’s top-100 prospects list. He sits 94.6 mph with his sinker, the most oft-used offering from a five-pitch mix.

Padres RHP Walker Buehler (3-3, 4.33 ERA) | He’s got a 2.25 ERA over his last three start but did not get out of the fifth on Monday against the Reds (4⅔ IP, 1 ERA). Buehler has a 3.32 ERA at home and a 6.23 ERA in five starts away from Petco Park. He has a 2.61 ERA in four career starts against the Orioles, including two last year (9 IP, 4 ER).
Orioles LHP Trevor Rogers (3-6, 6.15 ERA) | The Carlsbad High product has an 8.12 ERA over nine straight starts since beginning the year with back-to-back-to-back quality starts. He’s allowed eight of his nine home runs to right-handed hitters (.857 OPS). Rogers has allowed one run in 10⅓ innings across two starts against his hometown Padres, the last in 2024 (5⅓ IP, 1 ER).

RHP Germán Márquez (forearm nerve) is making rehab starts at Triple-A El Paso and RHP Matt Waldron (brachialis) is joining El Paso this weekend. Baltimore: C Adley Rutschman is day-to-day with hamstring tightness.
