McLaren and Red Bull are set to challenge an appeal with the FIA overturning two penalties handed to Pierre Gasly at the Monaco GP with the star returning to the podium a week later. Oscar Piastri had warned the FIA they shouldn’t overturn two penalties handed to Gasly at the Monaco Grand Prix after the governing body was reviewing the decision to reinstate him to the podium in the place of Isack Hadjar.
Lewis Hamilton, George Russell, Piastri, Gasly, Franco Colapinto and Lance Stroll all copped time penalties for indiscretions during a chaotic race in Monaco. Alpine immediately asked for a ‘Right of Review’ following the race when Gasly was stripped of a podium.

The French driver was ruled to have exceeded the pit lane speed limit on two occasions – resulting in a 10-second penalty that sent him from third to seventh after the race. Piastri felt it wasn’t right to change the result considering other drivers copped penalties in the race.
Piastri moved from fifth to fourth after the race because of Gasly’s time penalties. However, the FIA confirmed they had overturned the two penalties handed to Gasly and reinstated him to the podium on Friday.

This is a blow to Piastri who now drops championship points after dropping down to fifth. McLaren and Red Bull also lost constructors’ championship points after the appeal. It’s also a blow to Hadjar who is stripped of his podium and drops back down to fourth.
The Race publication initially reported McLaren and Red Bull have both lodged intentions to appeal, but have a couple of days to decide if they want to proceed with the formality. Piastri was adamant the result shouldn’t be overturned when speaking ahead of the decision.

Speaking ahead of the FIA handing down their decision, the McLaren driver said it didn’t make sense to overturn a penalty days after a race. “In the race, it was reasonably obvious, I thought, that there was something weird going on, because maybe you have one or maybe two cars at the same race getting a pit lane speed limit penalty, but not seven or eight, or however many it was,” Piastri told PlanetF1.com.
“It’s a shame, because it’s obviously impacted the result of the race, one way or another. I got a penalty, and if I didn’t have that penalty to serve, I wouldn’t have pitted it again. So, they can’t change the result now, because so many decisions were made in the race based off the penalties that were given, but that kind of thing shouldn’t be happening.”

Hadjar has now been momentarily stripped of his second F1 podium, which was even more special because it occurred in Monaco. Fans were left fuming at the decision and felt it could change appeals going forward.
