Carrie this, Carrie that… Have we forgotten that the most interesting character in Sex and the City is actually Samantha Jones?!

Exactly 28 years ago, the first episode of Sex and the City aired, a show that, almost three decades later, remains a comfort series for a large number of girls and women, as well as a visual document of universal female experiences. You can undoubtedly recognize each of the four women who made up this cult group in your own surroundings, but also in yourself: we all have that one friend who has spent years unsuccessfully trying to change her partner, the one who avoids oral and anal sex, one who likes younger men, and another whose favorite hobby is closely connected to the bedroom. Through their characters, the series portrayed archetypes of women in their thirties that have lost none of their relevance today, while, thanks to the visual approach of stylist Patricia Field, alongside the dramatic stories of these women, we also fell in love with the outfits they wore. Fendi, Gucci, Chanel, Manolo Blahnik, and Jimmy Choo were just some of the luxury brands that frequently appeared in episodes of the series, and later in the Sex and the City films.

Narrator Carrie is often the audience favorite, while my heart was completely won over by the independent Samantha Jones. The moment Samantha left Sex and the City was also the moment I decided to stop following the stories of these characters.

Samantha was always entirely herself, confident, brave, and the very definition of a woman without a filter. What I especially liked about her was her attitude toward heterosexual relationships: she never chased emotionally unavailable men, nor did they chase her, but instead approached romantic connections quite transactionally. Her body and her power belonged exclusively to her, and she did not allow society or some influential man to shape her view of freedom and sex. Samantha Jones was a powerful woman in the late nineties, and she remains one today, 28 years later.

That is exactly why I decided it was time to take a break from the Dior newspaper-print dress, strapless tops, and shimmering skirts (although I am a fan of them myself) and analyze the style rotation of another influential fashion figure who is not talked about as much as she should be. I recreate these eight outfits whenever I want to bring a part of Samantha’s strong attitude and directness into my own style.
