MATT Campbell hopes his new Ford deal can lead him back to Bathurst in multiple disciplines.
The Aussie star has made news in recent days after deciding to soon depart Porsche – with whom he’d become part of the furniture – in favour of the Blue Oval.
It comes as Ford prepares to make its Hypercar debut in the 2027 World Endurance Championship.
While top-level prototypes will clearly be his main focus, Campbell is also looking to continue his longstanding participation in Australian endurance races.
V8 Sleuth contributor David Greenhalgh asked Campbell on the ground at Le Mans whether he’d be likely to pop up in a GT3 Mustang for next year’s Bathurst 12 Hour, and the 31-year-old was all too happy to consider that prospect and more.
“I certainly hope so, for sure it’s one of my favourite events,” he said.
“I’ve definitely been nudging Ford in that direction.
“I want to do a bit of GT3 here and there, or even come back and try and do the Supercar endurance races, and so forth.
“Obviously everything is calendar-related, but I’d love to get in the Mustang and see what it’s like.”
Campbell is a two-time Bathurst 12 Hour outright winner (2019, 2024) and has made four starts in the Bathurst 1000 (2016, 2017, 2021, 2022).
He has previously contested the Great Race for both Triple Eight and Grove Racing, who happen to be Ford’s top two Supercars teams as it stands – although their respective co-drivers Nick Percat, Scott Pye, Will Davison and Tim Slade are all under contract through next year.
Triple Eight has also been linked to a potential Mustang GT3 program at some stage.
