Australia is set to have warmer than usual temperatures this week — with some major cities around 5C higher than average for the time of year.
Sydney will have highs in the low 20s all week while Melbourne will experience temperatures in the high teens with a top of 21C on Wednesday.
Brisbane and Adelaide will also be warmer than 20C, with Perth and Hobart in the mid to high teens.
Darwin will have temperatures in the low 30s with a possible shower or two later in the week.
The warmer temperatures are a part of a trend that is expected to continue throughout winter.
“Daytime temperatures for July to September are very likely to be above average across most of the country, except in parts of northern Australia,” the Bureau of Meteorology said.
“Night-time temperatures are very likely to be above average across most of Australia.”
The BoM said the tropical Pacific is edging closer to El Niño levels, with warmer sea temperatures already starting to affect the atmosphere.
“Sea surface temperatures for July to September are forecast to be warmer than average across much of the globe, including around most of Australia,” they said.
