Oscar Piastri has work to do in Spain, starting tonight’s Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix from seventh on the grid.

Mercedes driver George Russell is on pole position, desperate for a good result after failing to score points in either of the previous two grands prix.

Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton joins Russell on the front row, while drivers’ championship leader Kimi Antonelli starts third.

Ferrari has called in Charles Leclerc again, and this time he comes in.

It is a fine stop from Ferrari, and Leclerc emerges on track ahead of Oscar Piastri.

Kimi Antonelli has been called into the pits by Mercedes.

This comes after George Russell was surprised that he pitted so early.

He tells his team that he was managing his tyres, so he expected to go longer.

I was managing in that first stint. You could have given me the heads up.

Mercedes has responded.

George Russell has come in. His medium tyres are off, and new hards are off.

Russell comes out ahead of Lewis Hamilton.

Russell had told his team that he beleived Hamilton coming in so early was a clear three-stop strategy.

Red Bull also pitted Max Verstappen. He was on soft tyres, and now he has new mediums.

We have our first major pit stop.

Lewis Hamilton has got rid of his soft tyres, and he has new hards on.

It was a nice stop. Hamilton was stopped for 2.5 seconds.

Racing Bulls also pitted Liam Lawson. The Kiwi was running ninth.

Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc has caught and now passed McLaren’s Oscar Piastri.

The Australian does not have the pace at the moment, and Leclerc makes a nice move around the outside of turn 3.

Piastri is now seventh, where he started the race.

6/66: Leclerc nearly crashes into Piastri

Oscar Piastri is running in sixth, with Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc is just behind,

But the pair were nearly involved in a crash.

Leclerc stepped on the brakes much later than Piastri into the first corner, and the Ferrari driver nearly clattered into the rear of the McLaren.

Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton is no longer attacking Russell, but he is now defending from Mercedes driver Kimi Antonelli.

Antonelli, the championship leader, is hunting Hamilton for second place.

G’day Michael. Another late night. I’ve just read an update from Pirelli that the tyre pressures for tonight have been lowered to help avoid the ‘balloon’ effect . Be interesting to see how that makes handling differences for the drivers ?

And we have a mix of all tyres on the grid.

In the top 10 we have:

Mediums: Russell, Antonelii, Norris, Hadjar, Piastri, Lawson, LeclercSofts: Hamilton, Verstappen, Hulkenberg.

At the very end of the grid, Perez, Stroll and Alonso are on the hards.
