DE GOEY ON PIES’ NEALE LINK, HIS OWN FUTURE

Collingwood star Jordan De Goey says he’d love to see dual Brownlow medallist Lachie Neale in black and white in 2027.

The Magpies have emerged as a landing spot for Neale, with reports the club is willing to offer the 33-year old a three-year deal worth as much as $3 million.

And while De Goey said he hadn’t been personally trying to recruit Neale, an unrestricted free agent, he’s sure some of his teammates are trying.

“Not particularly on my end. But there’s a couple of blokes,” De Goey said on SEN radio.

“Nick’s (Daicos) probably one of them. He’s probably talking to everyone, ringing everyone and trying to offer them contracts himself.

“But not on my end. I think at the end of the day, players pretty much know whether they want to come or they don’t want to come.

“But definitely, he’d be a great fit. So, Lachie, if you’re listening, mate, come on, get on down.”

It comes after it emerged Collingwood reportedly included Daicos in its pitch to lure Zak Butters as part of a meeting with the Port Adelaide superstar.

As for his own future, De Goey, who was the subject of trade rumours last year, said he hoped to finish his career at the Pies but hadn’t started talks on a contract extension.

The in-form 30-year old’s current deal runs through until the end of the 2027 season, when he can become a free agent.

“My brother-in-law is actually my manager, so we speak briefly, but it’s honestly not about that for me right now,” De Goey continued.

“It’s just playing the best footy I can, because that’s how I can support the team, and what happens after that will happen after that.

“I’m just going to continue to keep trying to contribute to the team and play my role and hopefully get some more wins.

“Obviously, that’s the plan (be a Collingwood player for life). As I said, I’ve started at the club, and I’d love to finish at the club.

“But the footy world has changed landscape at times. So, I’ll just do my best for what I can for the team, and that’s all I can do.”

PORT, WINES CONTRACT TALKS ON HOLD

Port Adelaide won’t rush Ollie Wines into a decision on his future, with a call to come later in the season.

Wines has been rested for Saturday’s clash with Collingwood at the MCG as part of a management plan to have the 2021 Brownlow medallist fresh for next week’s Showdown.

Power coach Josh Carr said Wines, 31, who’s out of contract, is still weighing up whether he wants to play on in 2027.

“We’re having chats and having talks and that’ll come towards the end of the season,” Carr said.

“There’s no other real reason other than Ollie wants time to think about it and obviously it‘s around his body and whether he thinks he can keep going.

“At this point we’ve just put it off to the end of the year and we’ll have those discussions then.”

Wines has played 10 consecutive games after missing the first three rounds of the season.

Carr said Wines would continue to be managed to ensure the on-baller stays in cherry ripe condition.

“We want to make sure we’re looking after him, we want the best out of Ollie and a fresh Ollie is able to get in the contest and just do his best work,” Carr said.

“We either get to next week or the week after and go oh, now we need to rest him, so we want to get ahead of the curve of it and have him ready for the Showdown.”

“It’s a bit of a plan with Ollie, he’ll come back in next week, that will happen … We don’t want to run him into the ground.”
