Friday, June 19, 2026, marks 40 years since the death of University of Maryland basketball legend Len Bias.
Bias died of a cocaine overdose in a residence hall on Maryland’s College Park campus in 1986.

His death came just two days after being taken second overall by the Boston Celtics in that year’s NBA Draft.
Bias was a two-time All-American and a two-time ACC Player of the Year during his time in College Park. He scored 2,149 points as a Terp, which is the third most in Maryland history.
His number now hangs from the rafters at the Comcast Center.
He was inducted into the UMD’s Hall of Fame in 2014 and the National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame in 2021.
