MATCH REPORT: The Hurricanes produced an attacking masterclass as they dismantled the Chiefs 60-5 in Saturday’s Super Rugby Pacific Final in Wellington.

The home side scored nine tries on their way to victory to cap off a brilliant season.

It’s the Hurricanes’ second Super Rugby title. Their only previous title came in 2016 when they beat the Lions from South Africa in Wellington.

For the Chiefs, it was more heartbreak as they notched up an unwanted record. It was their fourth consecutive defeat in a Final.

The Chiefs couldn’t get out of their own half after relentless pressure from the Hurricanes in the opening minute. The visitors also struggled with the gusty conditions, with a number of their kicks going wayward.

The wall eventually broke with Hurricanes wing Josh Moorby weaving his way over the tryline.

With momentum on their side, the Hurricanes were running the Chiefs ragged, and they were in again when Ruben Love picked up a loose ball after a kick before sprinting in for the five-pointer.

Perfect set-piece execution and transition play led to some great passing, and it was Fehi Fineanganofo who raced away for his team’s third try in the 24th minute.

The Chiefs had their opportunities, but they lacked the composure to convert them.

Instead, it was the Hurricanes, who breached the defence again with Callum Harkin finishing off a period of sustained pressure with a try.

To rub salt into the Chiefs’ wounds, Love landed a long-range penalty goal to make it 29-0 at half-time.

Despite playing into the wind, it was more of the same for the home side at the start of the second half, with Moorby sprinting down the touchline for his second try after a superb set-piece play.

There was just no stopping the home side, with Devan Flanders and Jordie Barrett also adding their names to the try list after some impressive phase play.

With 20 minutes left on the clock, the scoreline was already 48-0 in the ‘Canes favour.

There was some more exceptional play in the 66th minute when Peter Lakai powered his way down the field before the ball went wide to Love, who produced an incredible finish in the corner to score his second try.

Seuseu Naitoa Ah Kuoi managed to get the Chiefs on the board with a try. However, the Hurricanes had the final say in the Final with Jone Rova running in for the Hurricanes’ ninth score after another great play by Moorby.
