Graham Potter speaks: “Obviously really disappointed. I thought we did lots of good things in the game, I think. That’s opportunities, but obviously defensively, we, um, yeah, you can’t continue that many in there and hope to win. But we’ll learn a lot from them again. We’re playing against a good team. Um, they hurt us in the wide areas. First goal was a long ball that we didn’t deal with very well.And then we came back into it.
“The boys kept going, in fairness to them, they kept going, but, um, like I said, it was one of those things we’ll learn a lot from. Sometimes you have to have these experiences. I think it was that type of game. We have to accept it and learn from it.”

Tony Mason gets in touch and is getting giddy: “A 5-1 scoreline and Sweden have a zero goal difference. This can only be good for Scotland. Lose 1-0 v Brazil and Japan win 2-0 against the Swedes and that is another the Scots finish above. I’m getting more and more optimistic for Scotland.”

It could barely have gone better for the Dutch, two goals each for Brobbey and Gakpo, and they rode out a Swedish storm. That was a near-complete performance, and there’s shared delight on the bench for Ronald Koeman, his brother Erwin and coach Ruud van Nistelrooy.

87 min: The Swedish miracle looks unlikely at this stage. As a commenter said before, the big difference has been the quality of defending, though the Dutch attacking was outstanding in the opening stages. Gravenberch steps back to tackle Elanga, who continues to stake his claim to face Japan in the next game.
86 min: Virgil van Dijk goes down, only to get back up again. He’s rubbing his hip, and then his thigh. Looks an impact injury.

84 min: Sweden continue to look dangerous, and Ali sets up Isak to smash in a shot that Verbruggen deals with, and a certain amount of artistic impression.
83 min: Graham Potter has not given up hope, and asking for more from his team, his suit a little more dishevelled than he’d prefer. The Dutch are doing their best to close down the space, though have no answer to Elanga’s pace. They breathe easy when he makes a mess of a cross that evades all of his teammates.
81 min: Sweden keep coming, though they keep making fouls to slow their progress, Bergvall loses the ball and then flies to commit a yellow card offence.
79 min: Ayari is subbed off, as Taha Ali of Malmo comes in his stead. That’s a winger for a midfielder. Ali starts off with promise, only for Van Hecke to defend well once more.
78 min: Isak shows his speed in gunning to the line, and the Dutch defending is not good, though Gyokeres cannot get to the loose ball. A Lindelof foul on Memphis stops the momentum.
76 min: A ball out to Summerville starts a patient buildup, before Gakpo sends away Van der Ven on the overlap, only to lose control. The announcer tells us this, in Houston, is a full house.
75 min: Ayari is booked for pulling back Gravenberch, with something akin to an NFL-style tackle on the galloping Liverpool midfielder.
73 min: Owen Linderholm gets in touch: “Here in the US I’m watching on Univision even though I don’t speak Spanish because of their much greater knowledge and love of football and they are lving this game.
“To me it isn’t that the Dutch are attacking better, is that the Dutch are defending better. Since about the thirtieth minute it’s been purely waves of attacking from both teams. But the Dutch are better defenders. Is a great game for a neutral. More goals in it for sure.”
Burt Bosma thinks similar: “What a game! Dutch scoring freely but Sweden creating just as many chances. It could easily be 5-4. It’s amazing what can happen when good players are given the freedom to play. More please.”

68 min: In a battle of speed demons, Elanga blasts past Van der Ven and Van Hecke, who looks a good buy for Spurs, who nods away.
67 min: Trey Brook gets in touch: “I can’t imagine how the Tunisian team is feeling at the moment, watching the team that beat them 5-1 get thumped like this.”
They would probably sack the coach if they hadn’t done it already.
66 min: Isak looks for help but none is forthcoming. The Dutch team have been quicker to the ball in the second half, save for Elanga’s bursts of speed.
64 min: Brobbey continues to hunt his treble. It’s been a fine, old-school centre-forward display from a player who came far cheaper than Sweden’s striking pair.
63 min: Brobbey wants that hat-trick and Lindelof is desperate, being run ragged, and knocks the ball behind with deep discomfort.
61 min: Elanga seems to wish to prove a point, his zip causing problems and forcing a corner. He and Gakpo have had troubled seasons, but they shown off Premier League class in Houston.
60 min: Game on? Unlikely. Koeman was already making a sub, with Koopmeiners and Guus Til for Reijnders and De Jong.

53 min: Gudmunsson is booked for going through the back of Summerville, who seems to have the beating of the Leeds player; they didn’t play together at Leeds.
52 min: Van Hecke has to come across and defend when Van Dijk is slow to react. Gudmonsson’s throw comes to Ayari who smashes from distance, with too many players in the way.
50 min: Gakpo has been busy, full of buzz, in a fashion not seen enough during Arne Slot’s dog days. Sweden have a very long way back and Ayari is their best chance, pinging the ball into the box to be hit. Nobody gets close.
48 min: That was too easy, the overload getting the job done once more. Brobbey was queueing up for the ball in but Gakpo got there first. Sweden were caught napping there, just as they were at the start of the first half.
