An aerial assault from winger Will Warbrick has seen Melbourne Storm overturn a heavy 16-point deficit to beat Canberra Raiders 42-20 in Cameron Munster’s 250th game at AAMI Park on Sunday.

Warbrick owned the skies, a constant threat under halfback Jahrome Hughes’s high balls with two of his stunning hat-trick of tries coming through high leaps on the back of powerful runs.

A fifth win in six games has the Storm in striking distance of the top eight, while the Raiders are edging closer to the cliff after a devastating loss.

The game turned on its head in the 20th minute when Storm captain Harry Grant entered the arena.

Backing up from Origin mid-week, the Queensland hooker’s minutes were limited to reduce his heavy workload, but his injection into the game had a profound impact.

With Grant starting off the ground, the Raiders were plus-16, but when Grant entered, the Storm ran amok to finish the last hour plus-38.

There was a concern for Grant early in the second half when he was hobbled with a hip injury, but he chose to play on and steer the Storm to another crucial win.

BIG HITS

RAIDERS STRIKE EARLY

The Raiders had not scored a first half point in their previous two matches, so they could hardly believe their luck when Storm winger Moses Leo dropped the ball cold 20 metres out.

The turnover was returned with interest with the Raiders scoring the game’s opening try through winger Savelio Tamale.

That confidence booster ushered in the razzle dazzle Raiders with the doubling their advantage through one of the team tries of the season.

On a last tackle play, young Raiders halfback Ethan Sanders put up a bomb that only travelled about 10 metres, but the Storm refused to make a play at the ball, leaving the Raiders to regather and put it through seven sets of hands before Hudson Young produced a stunning outside of the boot grubber for Owen Pattie to score.

Fox Sports commentator Andrew Voss was almost lost for words: “It’s an amazing try. It’s an absolute miraculous try by the Raiders. I don’t know if I can even tell you what just happened”

A coast-to-coast try to winger Xavier Savage incredibly had the Raiders up 16-0 when the speedster intercepted a Jack Howarth pass to run 95 metres to score.

DEFYING HISTORY

The Storm had not turned over a 16-point deficit since 2014, but they were not going to die wondering.

Storm coach Craig Bellamy called on his captain Grant to come to the rescue and he played a major role in the go-forward that led to Storm’s first try through Warbrick.

Warbrick then soared into the sky to collect a Hughes bomb and dish off to Ativalu Lisati for a try in back-to-back sets.

Munster levelled up the crazy first half when he crashed over, erasing the 16-point deficit in a matter of 11 minutes.

LACKLUSTRE DEFENCE

The first half was a missed-tackle-a-thon with both sides combining for 64.

Raiders centre Matthew Timoko took advantage of some lax Storm defence to put the Raiders back in front before Storm got on a roll and Warbrick made it a double to level the scores at 20-apiece after a chaotic first half.

The second half took on a different complexion with defences ruling, leading to 20 scoreless minutes, before Warbrick used Tamale as a stepladder to rise for his third try.

A huge call to penalise Timoko for obstruction on Hughes gave the Storm perfect field position to get some breathing space through a try to the ever-dangerous Leo, who was one of Storm’s most potent weapons with a team-best 225 run metres, before fullback Sua Fa’alogo put the game out of reach with a try.
