Welcome to the first issue of HC’s Highlights platformed by Green and Gold Rugby where the World’s Game will be talked about non stop. Today, as my first article, I thought we would talk some of the recent big games and various forums of rugby that have made for a great week of entertainment (and despair for two lots of Chiefs fans) involved.

First of all the Chiefs vs Hurricanes in the Super Rugby Final, a convincing result for the Canes as they put the Chiefs to the sword winning 60-5 in a nine try heist that was the highest winning margin of a Grand Final in Super Rugby History. All prayers to Chiefs fans at this moment in time as they get over this heart crushing loss. However, Chiefs fans cannot argue that the Hurricanes executed their game plan to perfection as they kept a significant amount of ball in the areas they wanted pouncing on the opportunities they had when in attacking territory. For other views and opinions, check out Brissy’s comments HERE.

The URC final between Ireland’s Leinster and the South African Bulls ended in a similarly convincing result with the Irish side prevailing over the South African side 36-7. An early advantage was created for Leinster as Bulls centre Canan Moodie was yellow carded in the first minute for a deliberate knockdown. Lenister pounced on this advantage and rode the momentum it created for the rest of the game, making them Champions of the URC.

The English Premiership final was the closest final out of the three played over the weekend as Northampton and their two Aussies beat Exeter and their three Aussies by 26-17 in a close encounter that had the difference of one try and two conversions decided by a late try in the 67th minute to George Hendy, making it his second pie for the day.

In further news, lower tier and local competitions continued over the weekend with the Semi Pro Shute Shield having some high scorelines with all teams scoring above 20 points and the majority of them gaining bonus points for their scoring ability. This weekend for Shute Shield should be one for avid rugby supporters to look out for as the professional comps conclude.

The amateur Suburban Sydney Competition continued to impress as all Division 1, 1st Grade games were entertaining with the 8 teams all scoring above 20 points and the lowest at 24. These high scorelines should not dismiss the efforts these teams place on defence with all teams being resilient on the goal line when significant attacking pressure was placed on them.

The schoolboy competitions in NSW including ISA GPS and CAS are all on break with the school holidays coming upon us. The results from last week in all 3 comps were significant, but as a Stannies Old Boy it was great to see the boys from Bathurst defeat their long standing rivals from Orange in dramatic fashion.

At the end of the day all professional rugby comps have completed and all of you must be asking what should I watch to replace the high thrills of the professional game. In answer, I would tell you the same as Nutta does each week and encourage you to get going down to my local rugby club and watch the games there. It doesn’t matter if you go to first grade or if you watch every game from ‘breakfast club’ on, as that club needs and appreciates the support significantly.
