European Professional Club Rugby is making some of its biggest competition changes since the current tournament format was introduced, with new qualification rules, a revamped bonus-point system and an earlier start to the season all set to debut during the 2026-27 Investec Champions Cup and EPCR Challenge Cup campaigns.
The changes were confirmed ahead of the 2026-27 pool draws and are designed to increase the importance of every pool-stage match while rewarding teams that consistently win rather than simply accumulate points. Clubs also will face a more demanding path to the knockout rounds, particularly those finishing in the middle of their respective pools.
Among the most significant changes are a new attacking bonus-point system modeled after France’s TOP 14, revised Round of 16 qualification criteria in both European competitions and a new tie-break procedure that places greater emphasis on victories. EPCR also confirmed that the European season will return to an October start after beginning in December during the 2025-26 campaign.
The updates will affect all 42 clubs competing across the Investec Champions Cup and EPCR Challenge Cup and could have a major impact on qualification races throughout the four-round pool stage.
New Bonus Point Rule Changes In The Investec Champions Cup And EPCR Challenge Cup
Perhaps the most noticeable on-field change comes with the attacking bonus point.
Previously, clubs earned an attacking bonus by scoring four or more tries regardless of how many tries their opponent scored.
Beginning with the 2026-27 season, teams instead must finish a match with at least three more tries than their opponent to earn the attacking bonus point.
The losing bonus point remains unchanged, with teams still earning one bonus point for losing by seven points or fewer.
EPCR said the change follows the model already used in competitions such as the TOP 14 and is intended to encourage teams to continue attacking throughout the match instead of simply reaching four tries before shifting to a more conservative approach.
Champions Cup Round Of 16 Qualification Becomes More Competitive
The path to the knockout stage also has been tightened.
Under the previous format, the top four clubs in each of the four Investec Champions Cup pools automatically advanced to the Round of 16, while every fifth-place team dropped into the EPCR Challenge Cup knockout stage.
That safety net is gone.
Beginning in 2026-27, only the top three clubs in each pool automatically qualify for the Champions Cup Round of 16. The final four knockout places will instead go to the four highest-ranked remaining teams across all four pools, regardless of which pool they came from.
The next four highest-ranked clubs after that will qualify for the EPCR Challenge Cup Round of 16.
The change means finishing fourth in a pool no longer guarantees advancement, placing greater importance on every bonus point and every victory throughout pool play.
EPCR Challenge Cup Qualification Rules Also Change
The EPCR Challenge Cup will adopt a similar approach.
Instead of the top four clubs from each of the competition’s three pools automatically advancing, only the top three teams in each pool will qualify directly.
The remaining three automatic Challenge Cup Round of 16 places will be awarded to the highest-ranked remaining clubs across all pools.
Those teams then will be joined by the four Champions Cup clubs dropping into the competition after narrowly missing Champions Cup qualification.
Like the Champions Cup changes, the revised format creates more competition for the final knockout positions and places additional emphasis on performances across the entire tournament rather than within individual pools.
Tie-Break Rules Now Prioritize Victories
EPCR also adjusted how clubs will be separated when teams finish level on competition points.
Previously, points difference served as the primary tie-breaker.
Beginning this season, the greatest number of wins becomes the first determining factor before points difference and tries scored are considered.
The adjustment further reinforces EPCR’s effort to reward winning matches over simply building large scoring margins.
Investec Champions Cup Returns To October In 2026-27
The European calendar also returns to a more traditional schedule.
After the 2025-26 competitions began in early December, the 2026-27 Investec Champions Cup and EPCR Challenge Cup will kick off in mid-October.
The earlier start spreads the competition across a longer portion of the club season while restoring an autumn launch that many clubs and supporters had grown accustomed to before recent calendar adjustment.
