CHICAGO — Dansby Swanson hit three home runs, including a grand slam, Michael Conforto homered twice and the Chicago Cubs pounded the San Diego Padres 23-3 on Wednesday.
Swanson had a career-high eight RBI — second-most in major league history from a player batting ninth. Seiya Suzuki, Pete Crow-Armstrong and Michael Busch also homered for the Cubs, who scored their most runs in a home game since 1977.
Swanson, who hit two home runs Tuesday, became the first Cub with back-to-back multihomer games since Patrick Wisdom in August 2021. He has nine home runs and 29 RBI over the past 13 games.
A day after the Padres and Cubs combined for nine home runs in a 9-7 Cubs win Tuesday, they combined for nine more with the wind howling to center again. The Cubs are 14-5 with the wind blowing out at Wrigley Field this season.
Suzuki’s three-run home run in the first made him the fourth Japanese-born player in major league history with 100 in his career, joining Shohei Ohtani (290), Hideki Matsui (175) and Ichiro Suzuki (117).
Cubs starter Colin Rea (6-5) allowed two runs on six hits while working out of two bases-loaded jams in five innings. Jordan Wicks (Conway) pitched three innings for his second save.
BRAVES 5, CARDINALS 1 Ozzie Albies homered and drove in two runs, and Atlanta held St. Louis to two hits. The win was just the fifth in 18 games for the slumping Braves, who nevertheless have managed to hold onto first place in the NL East. Albies’ home run to right field in the third inning snapped a 1-1 tie. He also had an RBI double in the first that knocked in Drake Baldwin from first base. Atlanta tacked on three runs in the eighth with RBI from Michael Harris II, Mauricio Dubon and Ausitn Riley.
BREWERS 4, REDS 2 Garrett Mitchell tripled in the go-ahead run in the seventh inning to cap a four-hit night to help NL Central Division-leading Milwaukee beat Cincinnati. The Brewers (53-31) moved a season-high 22 games over .500 with their sixth consecutive victory over the Reds this season. Aaron Ashby (12-1) won his major league-leading 12th game with 1 1/3 innings of scoreless relief.
PHILLIES 10, PIRATES 6 Trea Turner hit a three-run home run during a five-run second inning, Bryce Harper’s misjudged double scored two runs in the fourth, and Philadelphia beat struggling Pittsburgh ace Paul Skenes and the Pirates. Skenes (6-8) lasted 4 innings, allowing 6 hits and a season-high 7 earned runs. He has not won in his last nine starts, losing six decisions in that stretch.
ROCKIES 6, MARLINS 3 Mickey Moniak finished a single shy of the cycle, Hunter Goodman hit a two-run home run to cap a four-run fifth inning and Colorado beat Miami to snap an eight-game losing streak against the Marlins. Moniak homered for a second consecutive game when he hit the sixth pitch from Max Meyer (9-1) for his 14th of the season to put the Rockies up 1-0 in the first.

Rookie Chase DeLauter added three hits for the Guardians, who host the AL Central-leading Chicago White Sox in a pivotal four-game series starting on Thursday.
ORIOLES 6, WHITE SOX 1 Dean Kremer pitched six impressive innings in his return from a quad injury, and Baltimore avoided a sweep with a victory over the Chicago White Sox. Kremer (1-1) allowed a run and four hits, and Tyler O’Neill homered in Baltimore’s four-run fifth. Noah Schultz (2-5) no-hit the Orioles for four innings but retired only one more batter before being pulled. Leody Taveras also went deep for Baltimore.
RAYS 4, ROYALS 0 Junior Caminero homered in his sixth consecutive game to match the Tampa Bay record, hitting a two-run shot in the first first inning to help the Rays beat Kansas City for their seventh victory in a row. Caminero hit his 24th home run on the first pitch he saw from Seth Lugo (3-6) following Jonathan Aranda’s one-out single. Caminero tied Carlos Pena’s team record set in 2010.
TIGERS 6, YANKEES 2 (11) The New York Yankees’ losing streak stretched to seven, their longest in three years, as Camilo Doval forced in the go-ahead run with a bases-loaded walk to Spencer Torkelson in a four-run 11th inning that gave Detroit a victory. New York is on its longest losing streak since a nine-game skid from Aug. 12-22, 2023.
