The Kabul Tribune (KT) — A public exchange between Afghan
singer Farhad Darya and national cricket team fast bowler Naveen-ul-Haq has
fueled debate over Afghanistan’s cricket team selection and leadership
following the team’s recent poor performances.
The controversy began after Darya wrote on Facebook that, in
response to calls from many supporters, national team captain Hashmatullah
Shahidi could respectfully step aside to allow another suitable player to take
over the role.
Naveen-ul-Haq responded on Saturday, July 4, 2026, criticizing
Darya for what he described as disrespecting members of the national team.
The fast bowler urged Darya to refrain from commenting on
cricket matters and instead focus on his own profession.
“This is a gentlemen’s game; you don’t look good
getting involved,” Naveen wrote in his response.
He added that Afghanistan’s national cricketers are the
country’s true heroes and stars, arguing that posts mocking or ridiculing
players amount to little more than attempts to gain attention rather than
constructive criticism.
The exchange has sparked widespread reactions on social
media. Some users said Darya’s comments reflected the frustrations of many
Afghan cricket fans, while others backed Naveen and called for greater support
for the national team.
The public dispute comes as Afghanistan’s national cricket
team has faced mounting criticism from fans and analysts following a series of
disappointing international performances, prompting renewed debate over the
team’s leadership, structure and player selection.
