ADELAIDE’S reign of holding the record for the biggest Formula 1 event in history is over.
F1’s final visit to South Australia in 1995 drew an estimated four-day crowd of 520,000, in an epic swansong as the annual Formula 1 Australian Grand Prix prepared to shift to Melbourne.
That figure had remained unrivalled worldwide for more than three decades since, until being toppled by Silverstone on the weekend.

The 2026 F1 British Grand Prix reported an attendance of about 564,000 to smash the benchmark.
“What does it mean to be hosting the largest Grand Prix ever? It feels entirely appropriate for the place which ran the first round in Formula 1 in 1950,” Silverstone CEO Stuart Pringle told the Press Association.
Australia continues to be a major crowd-puller, with this year’s Albert Park event attracting 483,934 spectators.
