The Americans will cap off their first round with a 5-1 record to top Group A and secure the powerhouse nation’s ticket to the next round of the tournament.
James delivered a major all-around performance of 19 points, eight rebounds and seven assists across 19 minutes. The EuroLeague superstar hit back-to-back big-time shots in the closing minute and sealed the United States’ Monday victory by nailing his two foul shots with seven seconds to go.
Former NBA forward Torrey Craig led USAB in scoring with 23 points and six rebounds. His clutch three-pointer with 1:43 remaining gave the Americans a crucial one-point lead en route to the win.
After Craig nailed his two free throws to give USA a 92-88 lead, Joseph Avila drained a big trey to cut the lead down to one with nine seconds left.
After being fouled, James’ two free throws put the Americans in front yet again. Subsequently, Pako Cruz followed by splashing his foul shots to keep it 94-93.
After Terry Taylor bricked his two free throws, the Mexicans still had no ample time left to steal the win as Yamir Bonilla’s three-point throw from the backcourt missed.
Cruz led Mexico with a game-high 30 points and four dimes.
What’s next for Mike James and Team USA in FIBA World Cup Qualifiers?
With Mike James leading the way in his national team debut, Team USA aced the third qualifying window and will finish the first round atop Group A. Regardless of Monday’s result, the United States (5-1) and Mexico (3-3) have secured spots in the next round, joining the Dominican Republic (4-2) as the group’s top three teams, while Nicaragua (0-6) has been eliminated.
The three nations will merge with Group C (Brazil, Chile, and Colombia) and will form Group E, with the next qualifiers window set for Aug. 24 to Sept. 1.
