TOWNSVILLE 500 wildcards Reuben Goodall and Aaron Seton share a connection rarely seen in the main game.

That is, that Goodall’s first season of Supercar racing, in the 2024 Dunlop Super2 Series, came with Seton as his race engineer.

Seton’s decision to step back from racing at the end of 2023 in favour of taking on a more prominent role within the Gomersall Motorsport business paved the way for rookie Goodall to become his successor.

A largely challenging campaign eventuated, something which has proven the foundations for Goodall to experience bigger and better things upon entering the Tickford Racing fold.

Now they will share a pit boom on the big stage this weekend in north Queensland.

It’s a situation described by Seton (who is representing Matt Stone Racing) as a “full circle moment” and one which Goodall is welcoming.

“When I worked with Aaron, obviously he was very fresh out of Super2 and sort of moved aside and I drove the car that year,” Goodall told V8 Sleuth.

“I looked at it and was like ‘gee Aaron is quite a bit better than what he has got credit for. Like this guy is a pretty serious operator’.

“I’m very happy that he has made a step forward in his career as well because there was definitely a point in ’24 where he had almost admitted defeat and that it was all over. So to see him back in the hunt is really awesome.

“We have a massive amount of respect for each other, we know each other really well, and to be sharing a boom with him is a pleasure. I couldn’t think of anyone better to go up against as my first solo wildcard competition.”

The circumstances naturally do set the scene for some banter between the two.

“Maybe he knows how I race too well after engineering me for a year, so maybe he has got the upper hand,” added the South Australian.

“But we’ll see. I said to him ‘they’ve put me in the 25th garage and he’s in the 26th garage because they knew I was going to be quicker! So we’ve been winding each other up back and forth about it all week.”

What’s more is Goodall’s other pitlane neighbour is his best mate, Jobe Stewart.

Goodall, who hails from Adelaide, met the Erebus Motorsport full-timer in 2015 at a karting event in the latter’s hometown of Mount Gambier.

“It’s pretty special as well, but everyone knows once you put your helmet on, there’s not really any mates,” said Goodall.

“We’re all here fighting for the same thing. Jobe has got his own stuff going on, I’ve got my own stuff going on.

“But another guy where we know how we race very well because we’re on the sim 24/7 together, so he probably knows when I’m going to try to pass him or vice versa.”

The one and only Supercars practice session of the NTI Townsville 500 will be held this morning from 10:35am.
