Denis Shapovalov continued his resurgent 2025 season with a dominant performance in Los Cabos, defeating American Aleksandar Kovacevic 6-2, 6-4 in Saturday’s final to win the ATP 250 title. The seventh-seeded Canadian didn’t drop a set all week and sealed the championship in just 61 minutes at the Cabo Sports Complex.

The victory marks Shapovalov’s second ATP title of the year, following his triumph at the ATP 500 event in Dallas in February. It also brings his career total to four titles (4-6 in finals), and notably, his first on outdoor hard courts, with previous trophies all coming indoors.

Shapovalov is the sixth man to win multiple tour-level titles this season after Alcaraz, Auger-Aliassime, Cobolli, Fritz and Sinner. He joins join Humbert (Marseille), Fritz (Stuttgart) and Griekspoor
(Mallorca) as only ATP Tour champions in 2025 without dropping a set.

Now back in the Top 30 and aged 26, Shapovalov produced a week of consistent, high-level tennis. In the final, he landed six aces, won 81% of his first-serve points, and saved the only break point he faced. He converted all four of his break-point opportunities, hit 15 winners, and committed just one fewer unforced error than Kovacevic (23 to 22).

Shapovalov : “Amazing”

The match featured the first ATP final clash between two one-handed backhands since 2019 (Tsitsipas Thiem, ATP Finals).

“It’s amazing,” Shapovalov said after lifting the trophy. “To win three titles in the span of like seven months, it’s incredible. After winning my first title I struggled there for a little while. I had good results but wasn’t able to go through to get another trophy. It’s not easy out here, but weeks like this make it worthwhile.”

The Los Cabos title adds another milestone to Shapovalov’s comeback season. After falling as low as No. 140 following a knee injury post-Wimbledon 2023, the Canadian will return to the ATP Top 30 in Monday’s updated rankings.

Kovacevic, who reached the final by upsetting top-seeded Andrey Rublev 3-6, 6-4, 6-4 in the semis, will rise to a career-high ranking of around No. 56. The final marks just the second ATP final of his career. He didn’t become the eighth first-time ATP champion of the season.
