ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – La Cueva High School graduate Dylan Blomker says his journey is just starting after the Chicago Cubs drafted him in the fifth round.
Blomker told KOB 4 he learned about an hour before the MLB Draft on Sunday that the Cubs planned to take him, then watched the draft with family and friends.
“It was pretty crazy. I found out about an hour before the draft I got the news that I was going, I got picked to the Cubs,” Blomker said. “So I had a little to process it.”
Blomker said he and his parents knew ahead of time and told one friend so he could record the reaction, while everyone else found out when they heard his name.
“I let the moment kind of happen organically, me and my parents knew and I told one of my friends so he could record it, but that was it,” Blomker said. “Those were the only people that knew, everyone else was in the dark and then they found out when they heard it.”
The New Mexico Gatorade baseball player of the year went 159th overall on the draft’s second day.
“When I heard my name that’s what all went through my mind, went through my head, was all those hours with ABA that I’ve poured into there, and then also all the coaches that have poured everything they had into me to get me there,” Blomker said.
Blomker said he had signed with Louisiana State University but decided the Cubs gave him the best path forward.
“LSU was such a great option, it’d been my dream school forever, but yeah so there were hard talks,” Blomker said. “But at the end I think me and my parents were pretty decisive that we thought the Cubs were the best place for me to go, that was a good organization for me to go to to develop.”
Blomker said he expects to spend time in the Arizona Complex League and the minors as a right-handed pitcher out of high school.
