Coach proud as Knights battle through gastro bug
Newcastle coach Adam O’Brien praises his team after the side was belted by a gastro bug that left only five players available for captain’s run yesterday.
“Really proud of the playing group,” O’Brien says in his press conference.
“We had 12 of them in bed over the last 24 hours. … “The vast majority didn’t get to eat before kick-off – they just couldn’t keep anything in.
“I couldn’t be any prouder of them. I reckon the town would be proud.”
O’Brien, who had to apologise for criticising fans for not knowing footy a couple of weeks ago, is making a point to praise the 21,000 fans who turned up today.
O’Brien said the team was on the verge of forfeit if the sick players didn’t get on the field.

The Warriors were done as Tanah Boyd had another field goal charged down, but Leka Halasima scoops the ball up 43 metres from home and just explodes up the field and scores the match-winner!!!!
Boyd missed three field goals and a penalty goal that could have won it, but the last missed field goal lands in the arms of Halasima, who scores his second phenomenal solo game-winner of the season.
“We left it until the last three seconds and a bit of Leka Magic got us home in the end,” Chanel Harris-Tavita tells ABC Sport.
“There’s not many players who can do that.”

39m agoSun 20 Jul 2025 at 7:54am79′ Another shanked field goal … but they get a penalty!
The Warriors produce some phenomenal offloads to get up into field goal range, but launch the ball back to Tanah Boyd 45 metres out and he drills it along the ground and dead.
But the Warriors challenge and Jackson Hastings is penalised for not being square at marker!
Did Chanel Harris-Tavita completely regain his balance in the play-the-ball? Probably not, but Hastings, who put all the pressure on Boyd, was nowhere near square at marker.

77′ Warriors kick it dead on the full
Tanah Boyd bombs the kick-off dead on the full and Knights go back on the attack.
No risk from the Knights, who run it on the last and give the ball back to the Warriors right on their tryline.

72′ Tanah Boyd slices field goal shot wide
The Warriors halfback has a good look at a field goal from about 25 metres out right in front on the second tackle, but he cuts under it and the ball slices away wide right.
The Knights get seven tackles from the 20m line.
Good idea, poor execution.

70′ Warriors miss out on a 40/20
Tanah Boyd tries to drill a low 40/20 on the fourth tackle, but Dane Gagai just manages to get across to cut it off.

67′ Knights getting away with murder in the ruck
They’re lying all over the Warriors in the ruck and not getting penalised.
But they’re penalised for a high shot from Jack Cogger on Dallin Watene-Zelezniak as he drops a cross-field kick.
Tanah Boyd will take a shot for goal from about 15 metres in from touch.

63′ Warriors miss out after repeat set
Tanah Boyd earns his team a dropout and Jackson Hastings’s short kick goes miles over the sideline.
The Warriors try to spin it left and Chanel Harris-Tavita goes himself, but is bundled into touch by Fletcher Hunt.

61′ Knights knock on as they try to spin it to get out of their half
Newcastle fires it across the field and Dane Gagai tries to unleash Greg Marzhew but the pass goes to ground and the winger can’t handle.
1h agoSun 20 Jul 2025 at 7:32am57′ Knights hit the front with a penalty
The Knights finally get one through the sticks to take a 14-12 lead with 23 minutes left after a wild fifth-tackle play from one side of the field to the other earns them another set and they earn a penalty on the ensuing play.
Gagai pots the penalty goal from right in front.
1h agoSun 20 Jul 2025 at 7:24amThe Warriors are right back in it
All eyes are on Wayde Egan off the base of the ruck and he just pops a ball to Demitric Vaimauga, who finds a yawning gap between Jermaine McEwen and Jack Cogger to dive through.
“That was too easy,” says Steve Roach on Fox.
Tanah Boyd slots the conversion and the scores are level at 12-12 with half an hour remaining, despite the Knights boasting one more try.

46′ Another one goes the Knights’ way
Dane Gagai drops it in a one-on-one tackle and somehow the referee penalises the Warriors for a two-on-one steal. The ball came out before the second tackler arrived, and it wasn’t even a strip by my measure.

41′ Knights kick off to start second half
They left a lot of points on the table in that first half, so fans will surely be a little nervous.

Referees the focus
double movement is disallowed yet passing of the ground when clearly tackled is ok????
the talking points of this game regardless of the result will yet again be the standards of the referees
– Amand
It was the case last night too, with Shane Flanagan absolutely awaiting a fine for his comments after the Dragons’ loss to the Bulldogs.

Bunker call
Are you going back to address the fact the bunker awarded a professional foul / penalty try and the ref then just gave a 6 again ?????
– Amand
Hi Amand,
Are you referring to the DWZ-Marzhew collision? Because in that case bunker official Liam Kennedy said he ruled out a professional foul or penalty try because the contact was made in the field of play.
