KEY NUMBERS IN THE CAREER OF SIR GARFIELD SOBERS, WHO HAS DIED AT THE AGE OF 89:-

365 not out – Sobers’ maiden Test century, against Pakistan at Sabina Park in 1958, was a record individual score until beaten by fellow West Indian Brian Lara in 1994 and still stands sixth on the all-time list.

6 – an equally memorable feat saw Sobers become the first player to hit six sixes in an over, for Nottinghamshire against the unfortunate Malcolm Nash of Glamorgan in the County Championship at Swansea in August 1968.

16 – Sobers’ age when he made his first-class debut, as a spinner for Barbados against the Indian tourists – he took seven wickets in the match.

2 – first-class matches before his Test debut against England in 1954.

5 – Sobers is one of only five allrounders in Test history to score more than 5,000 runs and take over 200 wickets – 8,032 runs at an average of 57.78 and 235 wickets at 34.03. Jacques Kallis, Ian Botham, Ben Stokes and Kapil Dev are the other members of the exclusive club.

109 – an outstanding fielder to boot, Sobers added 109 catches.

93 – Test appearances for the West Indies, to go with a solitary one-day international.

103.14 – Sobers’ remarkable batting average in the Windies’ Test series win over England in 1966.
