Former NRL playmaker Luke Keary has blasted a call made by referee Wyatt Raymond that allowed Cody Walker to score in the 65th minute.

Although he had no issue with Walker scoring, it was the decision in the lead-up to the try that caught his attention.

Keary argued that the Rabbitohs’ five-eighth had knocked the ball on after receiving a pass from Brandon Smith before the ball had been regathered by Euan Aitken, insisting play should have been stopped.

“I think he’s got this wrong here,” multi-time premiership winner Luke Keary said on Fox League in commentary.

“It’s a great bust by Brandon (Smith), but he passes it to Cody, who’s not tackled without the ball at all and that’s a knock on.

“That is a knock on (and) Euan Aitken picks up the ball. I’m not sure what referee (Wyatt) Raymond (was doing).

“He wanted to blow the whistle for a penalty. He let it go and totally forgot that it was a knock-on.

“They can’t go back to that knock-on, but that is a deadset knock-on there and the Canberra fans are blowing up in the background.”

Fellow Fox League commentator Matty Russell suggested that Walker had been tackled by Raiders halfback Ethan Sanders without the ball but Keary insisted that was irrelevant.

“It doesn’t matter, Matty, because if he did tackle him before the ball, it’s still a knock-on and not play-on,” Keary continued.

“It’s still a knock-on (and) you go back to the first infringement. No matter what happened, he should’ve stopped the game.

“I’m not sure what he just explained to Joe Tapine, but he’s made a big error there.”

Luckily for the Raiders, the try didn’t affect the final score as the home side managed to hang on to win by ten points and move one step close to the top-eight.

Steve Roach added, “The referee was in two minds. He was just about to blow the whistle and then he put it away and played on.”
