A wild brawl that erupted at an under-18s rugby league match in Sydney’s south west left a 72-year-old man in intensive care.
The man was one of several injured after a violent fight involving players and spectators broke out at the end of a local game between the Campbelltown Collegians and The Oaks Tigers on Sunday.
The 72-year-old sustained broken ribs and facial injuries which will require surgery. He was treated in the ICU after being taken to hospital and is now in a stable condition.
Video from the Dudley Chesen Sports Ground in The Oaks appears to show an all-out brawl breaking out among multiple spectators near the carpark.
Punches then spill onto the field as a number of players appear to get involved in the fighting.
The brawl, which was described by one witness as “inhumane and vile”, is being investigated by NSW police.
Officers attended the scene and spoke to several people before dispersing the group.
NSW Rugby League are also reviewing the incident with a spokesperson saying that the two teams involved “have been stood down while the investigations take place”.
