John Longmire will not coach at either Carlton or Essendon in 2027 and will remain in Sydney.

The Swans premiership coach had met with Tasmania about a move south to be the inaugural coach of the Devils, but he has ruled out the Bombers and Blues as a landing spot.

Longmire said on AFL 360 the Tasmania process had clarified he was not ready to re-enter the coaching ranks in 2027.

“I’ll be staying here in Sydney and focused on the business that we’re building here that’s going really well and got great potential,” he said on AFL 360.

“I was asking more questions about them (Tasmania) than they were asking about me, and I think that told me more than anything where I sat.

“It certainly became clear over time where I sat with my coaching at the moment.

“No I’m not (ready to coach again). I certainly explored it, I went down the path, I looked at it seriously, there’s no question with that.”

Tasmania ultimately chose Ken Hinkley as its inaugural coach, having narrowed the search to the former Power coach, Longmire and Nathan Buckley.

Former West Coast coach Adam Simpson is on the coaching selection panel at Carlton, and said on AFL 360 the process was heating up at IKON Park.

“We’re catching up this week, just to go through what the final numbers look like, and then we get going in the next month or so,” he said.

“It starts this week … obviously the list is getting whittled down … by the time I get in front of them it’s the real stuff.”
