Argentine football lived through an extremely tense period during the senior side’s run at the 2026 World Cup.

Argentina had to settle for “second place” at the tournament, hosted by the United States, Mexico and Canada, after losing 1-0 to Spain in the final.

Throughout the competition, though, a campaign gathered pace claiming that the Argentine national team and their legend Lionel Messi had received special favouritism from FIFA, the International Federation of Association Football.

Players and coaching staff from several rival nations also launched fierce attacks on the Argentines during the World Cup on American soil.
