DICK Johnson Racing executive chairman Ryan Story believes Triple Eight’s recent struggles are a result of a knowledge deficit relating to the Gen3 Mustang package.
The last two rounds have been largely dominated by the Blue Oval’s Matt Payne, Kai Allen (both Grove Racing), Cam Waters (Tickford Racing) and Brodie Kostecki (DJR), while new Ford homologation team Triple Eight has gone podium-less.
Grove, Tickford and DJR have all been with Ford for years now – albeit the latter did somewhat start over last season – while Triple Eight only switched from General Motors in the 2025/26 summer.
“Fundamentally they’re still learning that package,” Story said via the PG and The Doc show he co-hosts.
“They’re a phenomenal organisation – just check the scoreboard.

“They’re almost without peer with what they have achieved over the course of their 20-25 years in existence. They’re still learning the package.
“We have got the advantage of multiple years of understanding what it takes to go racing in the Shell V-Power Ford Mustang and it’s the same with Grove.
“Grove have had a phenomenal year so far, leading both the teams’ and drivers’ championships.
“I think all you can really pinpoint and prescribe some of the struggles that Triple Eight have been having in recent times is down to the knowledge bank that we have in how to get the most out of this car and the package.”
Triple Eight is still second in both the drivers’ (through Broc Feeney) and teams’ championships, heading to Perth for Round 8 on July 31-August 2.
