A reunion between former star wide receiver Deebo Samuel and San Francisco wouldn’t benefit the 49ers – at least according to one NFL analyst.
Emmanuel Acho called Samuel a “glorified mascot” on a recent episode of “Speakeasy” and explained why adding him to San Francisco’s overhauled wide receiving corps would do more harm than good. Now, the 30-year-old free agent is firing back at the analyst’s opinion on social media.

“Now your roster is out of whack and imbalanced,” Acho said of the 49ers potentially re-signing Samuel (h/t 49ers Webzone). “I’m also not going to stunt the growth of first-round pick, third-year player Ricky Pearsall for Deebo Samuel. Is Deebo talented? Duh. But he’s probably had more 700-yard seasons than 1,000-yard seasons. So at what cost? At what cost?”
“I’m not going to pay a glorified mascot top tier money … if you a hype man, I’m not paying you to be a hype man,” Acho also said. “I’m paying you to get 1,400 yards.”
Acho has since apologized for the word choice and explains that what he said was “just mean” to Samuel.
Samuel, who played his first six NFL seasons with San Francisco, spent 2025 with the Washington Commanders but didn’t experience the same success he had in the Bay Area.
The wideout had two seasons with 1,000-plus yards from scrimmage under 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan, but averaged just 804 yards from scrimmage over his past two seasons. He also had just 89 touches in 2025, which was the fewest since 2020 when he had just 41 in seven games played.
The 49ers loaded up at the wide receiver position this past offseason as they signed veterans Mike Evans and Christian Kirk while also drafting De’Zhaun Stribling with the No. 33 pick in the 2026 NFL Draft.
While former teammates have vouched for the 2021 Pro Bowl wide receiver, it is yet to be determined if the 49ers’ brass have interest in bringing Samuel back.
