The debate over bringing the ‘six-again rule’ to the NRLW has intensified with three of the competition’s biggest stars weighing in.
It comes after Sydney Roosters coach John Strange called on the competition to consider introducing the rule, arguing it would speed up the game and improve the spectacle.

“There’s been a bit of debate about whether we bring in the six-again for the girls, and I think it would help the officials to allow the game to not just turn into a lay-on with five second play the balls,” the Roosters coach said at the end of Round 1.
“It’s not good enough, and it’s not a good enough spectacle if that’s going to continue. Maybe that is something that the NRL can look at.
“It will obviously bridge the gap with the boys. It is a quick game now. It is great to watch with the six-agains. It is very fast, and it doesn’t allow for that wrestle.
Asked by foxsports.com.au about the prospect of introducing the ‘six-again rule’ to the NRLW, Roosters star Jocelyn Kelleher echoed her coach’s comments.
The NSW Blues playmaker admitted that she would “love it” as it would add another attacking weapon for halves.
However, she acknowledged that it could create extra challenges for forwards in the middle who would be defending against a faster game.
“I think I played it a couple of years ago in BMD (Premiership) and I think I liked it,” Kelleher said.
“Get on the front foot, I think as a half it’s fun, but I’m not sure how the middles would feel about that having to go again, especially in defence, but there’s pros and cons to it.
“Some of the boys’ games they give away stuff on purpose and try and use it as a tactic, but there’s pros and cons. I would love it as a half.”

Kelleher’s teammate Keeley Nizza was also open to the discussion, agreeing that the ‘six-again rule’ could have benefits but stressed the importance that there will always be pros and cons to its introduction.
“I feel like there’s definitely some takeaways from it,” Nizza said.
“I think a lot of feedback from older people in particular about our game, the women’s game, is that there’s a lot less wrestle and I know that’s the way the men’s game’s gone back to now with less wrestle
“I think that’s something that people love watching is the quick play-the-ball.
“I think when there is slow play-the-ball, that four second play the balls it can be really frustrating to watch.
“I definitely don’t want to see the game go down that route.”

Meanwhile, teammate and former Golden Boot winner Tarryn Aiken believes the biggest priority should instead be ensuring consistency from officials, regardless of whether the ‘six-again rule’ is introduced.
“It’s definitely an interesting topic in our game,” Aiken said.
“I think probably just the consistency with the referee and around the ruck speed is probably what’ll help, whether it’s the six-again or not.
“I think it just needs to be consistent week to week.
“I’m not too strong either way. I just think consistency with the play-the-ball speed is the big thing and how that’s refereed. I’d just like to see more consistency.”
