Bernard Tomic has reached another milestone in his attempted comeback to top-flight tennis, winning his opening round of US Open qualifying.

Tomic has been busy travelling the world playing in Challenger tournaments in recent months, making two finals, including the ATP Challenger event in Colombia last weekend. He was forced to abandon a shot at winning the title due to wet-weather delays that hastened his exit to ensure he was available for the qualifying phase at Flushing Meadows.

Tomic travelled from Barranquilla in Colombia to New York in a mad dash as he prioritised a ticket into the main draw of the US Open for the first time since 2017.

So far it looks to have been the right call, after he defeated American Patrick Kypson 6-4, 6-4 to advance to the second round of qualifying.

Tomic will play Portugal’s Henrique Rocha next, after the world No.168 upset French veteran Pierre-Hugues Herbert in three sets.

Tomic has belatedly won over tennis fans who have got behind his mission to make something of his career, after a self immolation when he looked to have the world at his feet.

The Australian is now ranked No.167 in the world, which is a major accomplishment considering he dropped as low as 835 in 2022.

He’s made three recent lower-level finals in Lexington, Kentucky and the aforementioned Barranquilla.

His path to the Lexington Challenger final was impressive, after he came back from 1-4 down in the third set against world No.124 Eliot Spizzirri.

Tomic broke back into the world’s top 200 earlier this month, achieving his highest ranking since 2020.

Before Wimbledon, Tomic registered his first ATP tour win since 2021 at the Mallorca Open.

He defeated two top-100 players in Jesper De Jong and Aleksandar Kovacevic in Mallorca, marking his first wins against top-100 opposition since 2023.

The former world No.17 was one of six Aussie winners on the day in New York.

Jason Kubler, Priscilla Hon, Olivia Gadecki, Lizette Cabrera and Destanee Aiava were winners in the women’s draw.

However, Alex Bolt’s campaign ended in three sets, while Daria Saville was also eliminated.
