Lactate is getting a glow-up. Long blamed for the burning sensation in your legs during intense exercise, and often incorrectly called lactic acid, the long misunderstood molecule is now being tested as a fuel for elite endurance athletes.

Tadej Pogačar, the elite Slovenian cyclist who stormed to a record-equalling fifth Tour de France win on Monday morning (AEST), was photographed consuming lactate drinks and gels over the past three weeks during a dominant performance in cycling’s most prestigious event.
